I have volunteered at our local shelter for almost four years now. You need to be honest with your adoption counselor at the shelter ... or wait until you're in your home. Some animals (particularly dogs) need more room than an apartment. Even if pets are allowed, the counselor is going to ask you how you plan to exercise the dog.

I have to admit, at first I found the whole concept creepy. I was never fond of baby dolls even as a kid, and these just kind of, well, let' say the effect on my stomach wasn't good. And then I lost a kitten to a fatal disease when she was only 14 weeks old (feline infectious peritonitis). There is no treatment for it; it strikes hard and fast, and then your kitty isn't there anymore. :-( (

Exactly. I remember being in a pretty dire state at one point, and called a pastor whom I had met a few times, and whose church I had attended probably twice at that point. He spent more than an hour with me on the phone, talking me through what was going on ... with no thought of doing more than helping me through that very moment. Yes, I came to his church pretty regularly after that .
