I still suffer from that as well. I believe the feeling that being gay is as bad as being a murderer or rapists is very much still alive. My own parents equated being gay with murder and rapists just last year. I was so upset at them that I didn't speak with them for quite a while. This was all in the open forum of facebook for all to see. When I had friends defend me, my parents finally stopped,

But I have found it fairly interesting to see what people thought of the church right at that time. There are some good things I've seen so far. Not sure I'll make it through 600 pages of it though since the language is a century old.

I read the first couple chapters of the book "The story of the Mormons: from the date of their origin to the year 1901" by William Alexander Linn. It seems to be pretty interesting. Have any of you read it before? Is it worth reading?

Maybe we should just trust them when they say they aren't in debt. I mean, they haven't lied to us before, right??

Does the church build roads, run all the various social programs, etc etc.? Sure, if the city just dropped all of their financial obligations and just collected money from naive people and did nothing but build new building for them to meet in to be brainwashed, then yeah, maybe they'd be in a better financial position. Why are people so damned naive??!!

Have you ever put these into a book, or do you plan on putting them in a book? I think it would be great to read a book with all of this information in it that you share in your posts. Thanks again for sharing. (And now I just read Rag's comments :D But its true, I'd read the book)

When I moved to AZ I moved to the opposite side of where all the mormons live. Now I just live in the middle of a bunch of all different types of fanatical churches. Especially christ's church of the valley. They're just as messed up as the mormons.

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm also a testament to the same thing...the church is tearing my family apart as well. I stopped going to church a number of years ago because I figured out that it was a fraud. After figuring that out, I realized that there was no need for me to live a fraud life by trying to get married when I'm really gay. So now my parents barely talk with me. They think my

because I was working for TSCC at the time and I knew if I stopped going, my job would be in jeopardy. It was REALLY hard to listen to people go on and on about stuff they had no idea about; to listen to the twisted logic and twisted world view. It was sooo hard. I just couldn't do it anymore. I had to stop going and find a new job.

It just amazes me when my parents and other TBMs don't see how truly connected they are. If Joe smith were alive today I think the church would be more like those fundamentalist churches.

I'm referring to his method of "translating" the book of mormon by looking into a hat with a seer stone instead of looking at the actual plates. But it still amazes me that people are ok with him just saying one day that god told him that he should sleep with other men's wives.

I'm reading "Under the banner of heaven" by Jon Kraukauer and I thought I knew quite a bit about the Joseph Smith story. But I didn't know that he had learned his little hat trick from someone else! He heard of a girl named Sally Chase, who lived near the Smith family farm. I'm amazed at how many of his ideas just came from others that lived near him at the time. Krakauer, Jon (2004-

Awesome, congrats! I wish more families would realize that their families come first!!!! With my parents, the church comes first, family second. Really sad. I'm happy for you. :)

That's really so sad. I'm sorry :( That mind set pisses me off as well. The church LOVES it because they know if they can keep these kids ignorant of the real world, they have a better chance of keeping them in the cult. Hopefully in the future he'll get it. For some of us it just takes longer than others. At least he has you to help him when he's a bit older and ready to listen. Good luck!

"The members who sit silent and pretend to be blind are not innocent. For not speaking up, they are just as guilty as the 12 who sit on their pedestals." I completely agree! They have become very good at ignoring inconvenient facts and actions so that they can remain in the world with their rose-colored glasses on. Its much more conformable there for them than facing the truth.

great post NoToJoe! And thank you cludgie for pointing this out. I get so frustrated watching KSL or reading DN and even Faux snooze for the same reason.

That I don't have to listen to FAT meetings anymore. I'm thankful that I don't have to listen to people in Elder's quorum and in gospel doctrine talk about false things like they are completely true. I'm thankful I don't have to listen to people say how sorry they are for people who haven't heard of Jezus. I'm thankful I don't have to listen to people go on about how they wouldn't know what to do

I know it would devastate my parents if they found out, so do I really care enough about it to do it? However, on the other hand it REALLY upsets me that they are actively promoting political positions regarding gay marriage. Leave people alone and let them live the way that makes them happy! So I'm still on the fence.

It doesn't matter what you say at all, this will always be the case. It is soooo frustrating! I won't have conversations with my TBM parents because everything they say is true and everything I say is because I've been mislead by the media, end of story. GRR

I loved reading all of the comments on the article. They were very good. It always bothered me that the church would constantly say "the truth shall set you free" yet they are constantly lying to members and everyone else. Once I finally figured that out, the truth really did set me free!

I was utlra TBM but I could never wrap my head around the "need" for the atonement. It just didn't make sense to me either for exactly the reason you said. I also heard about it being for all of the worlds and often wondered why people on other planets would believe in some guy on some other world atoned for them. It was just weird to me.

I’d like to bear my thank-a-mony. I know this church is false. I’m thankful for getting to sleep in on Sundays and having getting to have the whole day to do what I want. I’m thankful for no longer needing to feel guilty for stupid things like buying groceries on Sunday, having a cup of coffee in the morning, enjoying a drink with friends, or having sex. I’m thankful that my life no longe
