Why do Mormons support him the most, though? Are they really the most partisan Republicans, or is it something more? Personally, I think Mormons are more skilled at holding the dissonance in favor of loyalty.

False certainty is harmful, and in the church it abounds, but sincere, intellectually honest certainty is a precious and rare commodity, and an example of that is authenticity and honesty between you and your children. Don't stop cultivating it, don't corrupt their knowledge of reality by faking. Be honest and let them witness the fruits, for better or worse, in light of full disclosure.

I believe my parents are the same. They are somehow able to adapt the church and themselves enough to make it work for them. Their core beliefs hinge on being children of God and feeling God's love. As for me, I feel that without the church and for all people. Perhaps that is why truthiness of the church and its claims matter, because it cannot provide anything good to me that I cannot othe

I was a wee one then and growing up in Texas. My husband was baptised in 90 in Toulon, and we have been in the Mulhouse ward for five years. Sorry to disappoint, but I do probably know someone you know!

I ended up debating a Mormon on church doctrine changes, and once I had submitted solid evidence, the poster asked me, in the manner of temple, my new name. I have spoken it on reddit but it seemed pretty gross in this context.

It's totally to shore up the faltering members. Mormoning is harder here in France and the numbers don't justify a temple. I think the leadership learned that recommends and therefore better compliance from membership might come with an in-country temple.

There was pressure on members. Our friends weren't planning on it because the mother is chronically ill, but they were strongly advised to attend and they caved.

The temple stuff in Paris accellerated the inactivity of our family. Our ward was expected to fabricate costumes and I didn't want to burden the sisters with sewing four youth costumes for kids with only potential marginal interest with parents who had zero interest. So I had to come out to my president, since I was serving in YW. Also, not being able to sincerely teach of priesthood restorati

I had a roommate who got pregnant with a boyfriend her family didn't know about and would have likely found unacceptable anyway. She solved her problem by marrying the guy and moving into their own apartment. Afterwards, as her roomies we got outraged calls from her family, asking how we could let this happen. It was in summer and we'd only known each other for a few weeks. Apparently her f

We were in the Dielsdorf ward/branch for three years until five years ago, right outside Zurich. Now we live on the other side of the French border...you can immediately tell whe you cross into Switzerland. France is a nice country but the Swiss are OCD in comparison about just about everything. Don't get me wrong, I love the country...it is a bit intimidating, though. We were nice to the

But they were still men! God cannot wait for perfect vessels to do His work, right? Except the whole premise of the Restoration is that God's church was lost through the Great Apostasy. Even if Joseph was inspired at some point, he apostasized and built a church around his sexual deviance. That's where the Godhead came to be....Joseph needed Hod to be a man, because if he is then he is o

Awesome story. There is a friend I knew when I met my now-husband. We both became engaged at roughly the same time, at BYU, went on double dates, and were friends after our weddings. She threw my first baby shower for me and my ward helped organise her wedding reception, as she had little family support. Twenty years later, I have lost touch with her and cannot find her. I have discovered

There was a new family in our ward in Texas growing up. They had eight kids and bought one of the biggest, most beautiful houses in town. The father quickly became very well-respected in the ward and, when he taught Sunday School to us youth, he had the most exciting and interesting stories. After a couple years, though, he was headed for jail for real-estate fraud. He and some other guys c

For the record, it can take much less logical reasoning to reject the church's claims than it does to reject God altogether.

I just cancelled the participation of my daughters in the temple festivities in Paris. None want to go anymore. It's nice that almost my entire family is out now. Our teen son is still committed but doesnt like going to church. He's an aspie. We won't push him.
