On June 6, 2006 (6/6/6) the membership office received the resignation letter that I had sent to them (with delivery confirmation) and I officially became an exmormon. In the ten years since, I have never once regretted my decision. I want to thank those here who helped me through that period and that transition. I'm glad that the resources I referred to often at that time are even easier to f

Addiction to pain meds is very common in Utah County. In fact, there is a documentary movie about it called Happy Valley (2008).

Xyandro, you are so right. Prayer does have the ability to be occasionally helpful, but only because voicing them can sometimes help a person to clarify something in his own mind, or give him a false sense of comfort (and sometimes that's all you need). As far as being blessed by whoever may or may not be on the other end, you would get as much benefit from praying to a stick as you would p

The fact that he read the whole CES letter is good news. Point out to him that although he has been taught his whole life that faith, prayer, and soul-searching is the way to learn the truth, that is not always the best or most reliable way. In this case in particular that letter is full of sources and references he can look up himself to learn the truth.

Resignation is an action that YOU initiate and that the church is legally required to act on. It has nothing to do with the church's "ticky tacky rules". They don't make the rules at all regarding resignation. When I resigned, I revoked the church's right to treat me as a member of their organization. I completely understand your point of view and not wanting to undertake the action

I don't post here often so I'm probably not aware of all the rules, but thread police? You mean because it's an old thread (I'm not the one who revived it!) or because I mentioned weed? I didn't see anything in the posting guidelines that would apply to my post.

I can only think of one woman who fits that description and is still in the church. And she just divorced my cousin because *he* stopped believing. *sigh* Anyway, good luck trying to find birds of a feather inside the church. If you do, it'd be rare. I think you might benefit from going to a post-mormon meetup. You'll likely find like-minded people there, except mostly ones who are either alre

Wow, it feels weird replying on a four-year-old thread, but, how would I improve on the 10 commandments? I guess I'd legalize weed.

Wow, good job reviving this four-year-old thread. I'm not sure how you even found it! :)

I resigned out of principle. I would have done it whether the church did anything with it or not. However, two things it DID accomplish for sure was stop the young men coming by for fast offering collections, and stop home teachers from visiting.

Congratulations! Your letter looks exactly like the one I sent. I actually wrote two letters--the one I sent (which looks like yours) and a longer one where I gave reasons and vented. It was therapeutic to write both, but I recognized that the longer one wasn't going to get the job done any better than the shorter one.

I've seen a couple of recommendations in this thread for the Toyota Prius. I bought one new in 2006 and have 115,000 mi on it and it's been great. No mechanical problems and great gas mileage (which for me is usually 46 mpg, not 50, but glad others are getting that). Because of the torque of electric motors, it also has surprising acceleration which makes driving around town pretty nice. That

I'm surprised that people rave so much about The Giver. Perhaps I misunderstood it, but here's my review. It's a monomyth story where a boy takes upon himself the memories (sins?) of the world under the pretext of making life better for everyone else. He becomes enlightened in the process, and then releases them back upon the world because he recognizes that people are not better off being shi

I agree. Going to BYU is a mistake. Edit: The reason I replied directly underneath the post that I did is because of all of the stories of students who either lost their ecclesiastical endorsement or were caught in an honor code violation and then were kicked out. Some of them have had trouble with BYU either not allowing their credit to transfer, or not issuing their diploma (even if they

Years ago I was at a beer festival in Idaho Falls and saw a bunch of people wearing these t-shirts: http://xmormondrinkingteam.com/skin/frontend/default/helloeuropa/images/logo.png For those who don't want to follow the link, The logo on the shirt is the Angel Moroni with the trumpet, except, instead of a trumpet it's a beer bong. I think the shirts would be more widely applicable though

When I first stopped wearing garments I bought some Hanes undershirts and wore them for a few weeks. Eventually I figured out I was more comfortable without any undershirt at all and since then the only time I've worn one has been when I've occasionally felt I needed one under a white dress shirt. I also wear undershirts to sleep in (but not under anything). As for underwear, just regular ol'

To the OP: You didn't give much detail about your situation, but it sounds like you may be walking a dangerous line attending BYU. If by "closeted ex-mormon" you mean that BYU still thinks you're Mormon, you could find yourself in a tough spot eventually. If they find out before you graduate, you could lose your ecclesiastical endorsement and be kicked out. If they find out after you

About time. I heard about this yesterday and read some sad comments on Facebook about suicides that can be traced to this book. I'm curious about what *isn't* in the Tribune article. Specifically, how was the decision made to allow the book to go out of print? Is that a decision that is made by Kimball's estate, since he's the author, or by the church (or Deseret Management Corp.)? Who discuss

My step-father was in his 80s when he and my mom went on a mission. They started as a missionary couple in one of the proselytizing missions in California. Most of their time was spent visiting inactives and trying to figure out how to get them to come back to church. That was very hard on them so after a few months they made a change and spent the rest of their mission working in the Washington

Me too. Attempting to be as logical as possible after a lifetime of indoctrination, I examined my own beliefs. The first to go was a belief in the supernatural, including God, making me an atheist (not quite overnight...like CrispingPin the process took some time). When you stop believing the first Article of Faith, it no longer makes sense to be Mormon, but it wasn't anything specifically about

I have three children who I would die for, yes. But not kill. Under any circumstance. That's exactly my point. Anyone asking you to do it, even if you believe it's God who is asking, is pure evil. Abraham didn't know it was a "test". And yet he was willing to do it. That is not admirable, it's disgusting. Never, ever, put God above your children. It's unfathomable to me that people see

How the hell can anyone put a positive spin on the story of Abraham and Isaac as found in Genesis 22? (If you're not familiar with the story of Abraham nearly killing his own son because God commanded it, there is a shortened version with cutsie pictures for children on lds.org. https://www.lds.org/manual/old-testament-stories/chapter-9-abraham-and-the-sacrifice-of-isaac) Even as a TBM, thi

I have mixed feelings about my ancestors who were converted by missionaries in the eastern United States, England, Jersey, and Denmark, and made their way to Utah. They were incredibly resourceful and brave people to make the trek and I admire their pioneer qualities even though they came under, what turned out to be, false pretenses and quickly were assimilated into one of the largest cults in t

I guess it depends on why you're asking, but.... I'm a fairly extreme introvert, so I don't need any interaction with neighbors, and I have none. I live in Provo, which many see as the most Mormon place in the state, but honestly, it's been fine here for me. Plus we have Google Fiber. I know a number of people at work who have similar beliefs to mine and have left the church, and I'm involv

I'm writing this reply primarily as a data-point for others who may also be in "an uneasy truce" since I doubt you're going to be able to dissuade your daughter. It sounds like she's made up her mind. I agree with scotslander. I negotiated-capitulated-agreed-surrendered early on, and the result is: oldest (daughter) isn't falling for it and stopped going to church middle (son) wen

In addition to a modern language version, they should also do a modern setting version (kind of like the Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes version of Romeo and Juliet). So, for example, instead of Lehi and his family leaving Israel by ship because Jerusalem was about to be destroyed for their wickedness, it could be about an American family driving their RV to Mexico because the court of the lan
