You are correct that the best thing to do is tell your parents yourself first. Each ward/stake is it's own little kingdom and there is no telling what the local idgets will do. I agree that the best thing to do is RESIGN direct through SLC but the locals will still be involved.

In LDSInc troops are there as a calling. Not because they have a love of and knowledge of the program. I believe this is why we see so many accidents (including really stupid ones like setting up a tent under a power pole) happen. Boy Scouts are not a choice but a calling/chore/responsibility.

Decide if it is something you really care about. If not, let it go. If it is, SAY SO in a reasonable way directed only to that thing. Be a "fair fighter" not a "stamp collector". It is going to be hard at first. Try writing it out. Practice in front of a mirror if it helps. In the end you will be glad it is a skill you have acquired :)
