it's all good (as always) but you really got me with: "simply because Jesus Christ was too bored with the nuisance ordinance to show up"

this article is being discussed by active Mormons on another board (can't link to it here) and someone made an empathetic statement about the author and this was part of the response he got: "the church is responsible for teaching relatively complex things to millions of people with the average intellect of your typical walmart shopper." there you go - that's the pro-LDS talking

"I also question myself regarding how blameless I am in my representation of these doctrines as definitive? Was I complicit in telling stories I suspected were problematic? Could I have made an effort to be more informed? Could I have asked more questions, been more thoughtful, mindful? How did I get to this place where I have cause to wonder about my own, and the church’s integrity?"

the further along this case gets the more interesting the over all situation is to me: their customers haven't cared (much) about the lack of disclosure - in fact, their best customers actually seem to expect it the US government (the only government they seem concerned with) has always been very 'hands off' with religion so... why not lie? when your back is against the wall and nobody

"nothing has been accomplished except to reinforce the caricture of the angry ex-Mormon" how blatant would the fraud have to be before you wouldn't care about caricatures?

I've decided i'm just going to start posting this everywhere - comments sections on news stories, here, other Mormon-related sites, etc. "this is not about religion - this is about fraud"

serious question for you - what do you expect them to tell the worker drones? I'm sure right now information about the case is on a need-to-know basis only - everyone that isn't working on this case (read: almost everybody at HQ) is going to get pacified I mean, they're not just employees but also customers - of course they're going to be told that "everything is A-ok, keep your heads

yes - Grant Palmer addresses this in his book the clock started the moment JS told the first person about the plates and/or the lamanites etc. he had many years to flesh the story out (assuming he did it himself...)

I would love to see disclaimers on church materials distributed in the UK - much like we see on products in the US: WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. could you imagine a big fat warning on seminary/sunday school manuals for each issue in the case? WARNING: The claim that the Book of Ab

I hope they try - the longer this drags on the more news articles there will be with the words "Mormon" and "fraud" right next to each other

(I posted this as a continuation but randy beat me to it!) there was a lot of good relationship advice in the first thread - maybe others will want to add more I know it got mentioned in the first thread but just in case it gets lost in all of the other stuff... DO NOT MOVE OUT it will cause you more legal headaches if she does go for a divorce also, it will make it difficult for

that's what is so great about the way Tom did this - no matter how TSCC spins it to the faithful (even if they "win") the words "Mormon" and "fraud" are going to be connected in the minds of non-Mormons for years (forever?) we have so much information coming at us from every direction now so our brains just latch onto the simplest version of things that aren't act

the take-home message of the peep stone story is that if that's what TSCC is going with then it kills all apologetics about anything contained in the BoM - they have to take every word in that book at face value because according to the peep stone story joseph saw the words and spoke them for the scribe iow - god did the translating, not Joseph so if Mormon used the word deer Joseph should

no - it's 20% of the tithing - so if you tithe 1.00 the government also gives 0.20 directly to TSCC (which is why TSCC could be in a lot of trouble - the UK government has been giving TSCC taxpayer money under the assumption that TSCC is a "charity"...) here is another thread with more information: http://exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,1163832,1163832#msg-1163832

I admit right off the bat that I have nothing to back this up but... my last calling was executive secretary and our bishop was very direct with the bishopric about our numbers - this was about 10 years ago so I really can't remember if money was one of the numbers but I specifically remember home teaching - he was openly (well, within the bishopric) competing against another bishop/ward my

I could be way off base here but I don't think of him as freakishly charismatic so much as I think of him as being extremely polarizing what if he actually wasn't good with social cues? by that I mean what if he was literally fearless? what if he made demands on people and most of the time they fell flat but some of the time some people (for whatever reason) went for it I don't think of h

nice to hear Tom get another chance to state his case - even if is was very short interesting to hear the legal expert being very careful with his words - on the one hand he repeated several times that he doesn't think matters of religion should be in court but on the other hand he very clearly stated that he can't disagree with the summons because he isn't in possession of the information tha

wow - thanks now i'm wondering how tithing settlement works in the UK... do you declare that you've paid a "full" tithe if the value that TSCC received in your name add up to 10% of your income? -OR- do you pay 10% of your income so that you can declare yourself a "full" tithe payer and then TSCC gets more money out of the government? crazy stuff - potentially
