Reading off words that appear in a stone is dictating, not translating. I suggest that we don't use the word translate when talking to a TBM about the BofM, but instead make it a point to use the word dictate whenever we can. Don't let them get away with saying translate without being reminded of the difference.

Isn't interesting that Jesus reportedly cast the money changes out of the temple, and one of the first things you see after passing through the temple foyer is a money changer?

Today I stopped to talk to the missionaries because it was so hot and I felt bad for them. It has been over 100 degrees here for about a week. They were tracting door to door in a very run down trailer park. I was driving through it because I had stumbled upon such a run down down neighborhood that I didn't know existed. I asked them if I could treat them to a meal in a cool place. They said

Needles. Summers are horible, but winters are fantastic. The Mohave desert is an incredible place. I was there a month ago and found some tadpoles near an old Indian spring. Apparently these toads can live underground for a long time then come up to reproduce when there is enough water. It's hard to believe that they are down there under 120+ degree sand. I spent quite a bit of time in

Interesting. I grew up near Oatman (an old mining town named after her, and now a tourist site) and visited there many times. I have seen her pictures with the tattoos on her face and read her story, but I didn't know she was Mormon. I need to brush up on the Brewsterites and all manner of 'ites' from that period.

Also, JS had avoided complying with warrants and extradition papers from Missouri many times, including once by escaping from his captor. He was more slippery that scum on a pond when it came to the law, and those men weren't about to let him slip away again.

I have read Age of Reason twice, and my opinion is that Thomas Paine is correct. I found his arguments logical and persuasive. The words poet and musician seem to have been replaced with prophet and prophecy, at least in the books of Samual, Kings and Chronicles. The text makes more sense when it is looked at that way. A small excerpt from the the quote above: "The account given of

I look forward to seeing posts here from institute students that go something like, "I probably could have come to peace with the material in the essays, but realizing that they lied to me all of these years is more than I can accept." I agree that those who survive this purge will be innoculated and relatively immune to any and all damning information. However, those survivors will

This is from a recent post: The following chapters of Isaiah in the BofM were written after the fall of Jerusalem, which is the event around 600 BCE that Lehi supposedly fled Jerusalem to avoid. 1 Nephi 20 – Isaiah 48 1 Nephi 21 – Isaiah 49 2 Nephi 7 – Isaiah 50 2 Nephi 8 – Isaiah 51 It is self-evident by the text itself that these chapters were written during or after the s

I think this is one of the many problems with the BofM that doesn’t get enough attention, so I am putting this out there as a reminder. Perhaps there is someone out there on the board today that is questioning and just needs a few more books on their shelf. The following chapters of Isaiah in the BofM were written after the fall of Jerusalem, which is the event around 600 BCE that Lehi supp

I wonder if it every occurs to Mormons that Nephi’s beheading of Laban has similarities to those by ISIS? The motive is religion in both instances. After seeing the video of the beheading of Daniel Pearl years ago, which I wish I hadn’t, the images I have in my mind when I think of the Laban story are much different than before. It is comical and pathetic that one of the first lessons ta

One of the most damaging problems caused by the Christian religion is the belief that Christ is coming soon and the earth will be burned and then renewed. This negates any need or responsibility for taking care of the earth and conserving its resources.

As alluded to, it works quite well in the opposite direction. "When she told me she was having concerns about polygamy I started to look into it, but I had a dark feeling inside and I knew that was God's way of telling me not to read those things." Response: "Perhaps you were having feelings that any normal person should have when they read about men in their 40's marrying

some people think she should wait a while. After all, she has been told her whole life that her greatest goal in life is to marry a return missionary (which he is) in the temple. I doubt she ever heard taught in Young Women’s class that she should wait until a certain age. If a teenage boy gets his Eagle Scout at a younger age it is a good thing, right? Why not this, too? Young women have o

Mormons just don't get it. Baptisms for the dead expressly imply that they believe the dead person's religion or beliefs were bull$hit. How is that not offensive?

From the OP: > The point I want > to make is that you can’t divorce the > ‘scientist’ from the responsibility for how > the end product of their ‘thinking’ is > eventually utilized. This idea is discussed by Carl Sagan in his brilliant book Demon-Haunted World, Science as a Candle in the Dark. The 16th chapter is entitled When Scientists Know Sin, and it talks

Any Mormon that tries to wiggle out of the fact that Mormon doctrine includes young earth creationism needs to refresh their memories of D&D 77. These two verses alone prove JS was a false prophet. Section 77 5–7, This earth has a temporal existence of 7,000 years (From the section heading) 6 Q. What are we to understand by the book which John saw, which was sealed on the ba

Before reading "Going Clear" I knew Travolta, Alley and Cruise were Scientologists, but the book says that Greta Van Sustern on FOX is also a Scientologist. That surprised me.

100+ When a teenage girl investigator is getting love bombed in Young Women's, she has no idea that her dad probably won't be at her wedding, and she usually doesn't find this out until AFTER she is baptized. It has been said here many times before, a sign of a cult is lack of full disclosure before joining.

I think one of the reasons depression might not be recognized by those around the missionary is that some signs of depression can mimic the appearance of Mormon "spirituality". A jovial missionary who initially jokes around, even to the point of being seen as "light minded" eventually becomes depressed and now acts and talks like the GA's do in general conference, slow and mo

Going Clear about L. Ron Hubbard He was crazier than I ever imagined. As the saying goes: "Scientology. Making Mormons look sane since 1950." You will see many similarities between Hubbard and Joseph Smith. Facinating read.

http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?oeidk=a07eag7te3fbb4ed9fe&llr=z7h5t5cab I can't imagine how they can fill a three day conference based around BofM evidence. There must be a lot of fluff and repetition. It says no recording or videotaping is allowed. That is probably because their "evidence" would be torn apart on sites such as this one.

I corrected a typo: I had said "can" instead of can't in the first line. This is one reason I CAN'T believe in Christ. If there was death in the world before 6,000 years ago, which there certainly was, then there was no fall of Adam. If this is case, there is no need of a Redeemer to redeem us from the fall. In other words, if you believe dinosaur bones are more than 6,000 year
