I agree, I didn’t see it as asking for permission either. In my letter to member records, I said I was informing them that I had resigned my membership, and that I was directing them to remove my name from their rolls.

My husband went to our local Walmart a while back, and had to wait at the door behind an older woman who was resisting putting a mask on. The store clerk finally got her to comply, and she and my husband went in to the store. He lost sight of her, but came across her a few minutes later. She stopped in an aisle, pulled down her mask and coughed heavily. Then she replaced it and carried on! Yea

I’m also in Alberta. My husband and I will be on our own this year for Christmas, but hopefully we will FaceTime with the kids and grandkids throughout the day. I wish this lockdown had been instituted a month ago, just as our cases started increasing so much. Those in charge don’t always listen to the people on the front line unfortunately.

We have all of the traditional Christmas foods. My husband’s mom was Ukrainian, so we also always have perogies and cabbage rolls. The year my granddaughter was born, we had Christmas with my daughter, her partner and his family. His mom is Costa Rican, and the whole group of us made Tamales together. They were heavenly! I don’t know yet what this year will be like, but my husband and I a

Here in Alberta the number of covid cases has risen by 15,000 in just 3 weeks. Our population is only about 4.5 million people. Our Chief Medical Officer of Health began her update today with the words, “Our situation is grim.” Meanwhile our Premier, the leader of our government tweeted about tech startups. But that’s another subject... The second wave is hitting us with a bang, as it is

That’s interesting. I saw in the news today that there was a protest in Steinbach Manitoba against new restrictions the government has imposed due to a strong Covid surge in the province. Steinbach was founded by Mennonites and still has a sizeable Mennonite population. The protesters shown in the accompanying picture were all dressed in traditional mennonite garb.

He always seemed to be such a gentleman, and never left behind his Canadian roots. I remember him hosting “Reach for the Top” back in my long ago childhood days. Very sad to see him gone.

Funny! Those costumes are also appropriate for Alberta. In fact, I’ve been wearing my winter coat for a week and a half already!

Harry and Meghan wouldn’t have been able to stay in Canada longer than their visitor’s visas allowed - generally 6 months. Moving to the US made sense given that Meghan’s citizenship allows for Harry to reside there as her spouse. Not that where they live matters much in the grand scheme of things...

The 63 or so people in Hyder Alaska, on the border with BC, are also in a bad way. It’s pretty much isolated from the rest of Alaska, and aside from the local pub the village has very little in terms of basic services - no gas station, grocery store, etc. It’s 3 kilometres from Stewart BC, and normally the residents freely travelled between the two communities. Now Stewart residents can’t g

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians! For the first time in my life, we are having ham instead of turkey for our meal. Feels weird, but I guess turkey is a tradition, not a law. It also feels really strange because of Covid. We are spending the day with our kids and grandkids. There will be 14 of us, which is under our chief medical officer’s recommendation of a cap of 15 people. And we

Human, I retired from teaching in 2015, and then substitute taught for a few years. I gave that up last year, and now with Covid I wouldn’t even consider returning to the classroom. My daughter in Leduc is continuing on with online distance learning with her two kids, at least for the first term.

Your friends should be able to travel through Canada now. As I understand it, people who are Alaska residents or others who can prove a need to travel to Alaska are admitted into Canada at one of 5 (or 7, I forget) border crossings. They are expected to travel through with minimal stops, and must follow designated routes depending on the border crossing they used. They are given a tag to display

The government of Alberta recently announced that school will start in September with “near normal” conditions. Meaning introducing protocols for hand washing/sanitation, social distancing etc, but with no limit on class sizes. That pretty much makes social distancing next to impossible. I retired from teaching a couple of years ago, and I know how much space kids and their desks take up

I’ve long admired Debbie Palmer, and was very sad when I learned she had died. She did a great deal to expose to Canadians the abuses of Mormon polygamy and was a tremendous help to others who left the flds and the community of Bountiful. Thanks for posting this Nightingale.

I’m reading “How the Scots Invented the Modern World” by Arthur Herman. Learning lots about the Scottish Enlightenment and history. And I’m sort of on a break from another book that I’m halfway through called “419” by Will Ferguson. It’s about the email scams that originate from Nigeria (where the area code is 419) told from the perspective of both a scammer and his victims. A ve

I’m In my 60s, so Vera Lynn was well known during my growing up years. “We’ll Meet Again” and “White Cliffs of Dover” are very familiar songs for me. When I was teaching school, we would hold a ceremony every year to mark Remembrance Day in Canada. We had a music teacher for a few years who taught all of the classes “We’ll Meet Again” and the ceremony would close with all of

Interesting, I’m in Canada and pronounce “aunt” as “ant”. Come to think of it, I don’t think I know anyone who says it as “ont”. One difference in pronunciation I have noticed between us is the colour “mauve”, which we say with a long o sound, as in “home or boat”. On all the DIY shows I watch from the US, it sounds like “mawve” to me.

Catnip, I am posting this to send you a big thank you. I have followed your posts about your recent dermatological issues. It was your "return and report" post that really caught my eye. You described the mole on your forehead as looking like a tiny pink mosquito bite. That description got me to take action about a small growth beside my left eye, that I would have described in the same

Kentish, my husband and I make an annual trip to Victoria, always near the end of April. Sadly, this year's trip had to be cancelled, but we are hopeful we will make it next year. We stay in the James Bay neighbourhood. Our hotel is next to Beacon Hill Park, and is right behind the Provincial Museum. It's a 5 minute walk to downtown, the inner harbour and the Empress Hotel. We can hop on a wa

I walk with my best friend for an hour every second day. She’s the only person besides my husband that I spend time with. I text/phone/FaceTime my kids regularly. I keep up with other friends through texting and Facebook. I read, try to get to “house things” that I’ve been putting off and have been watching Netflix more than I should! Here in Alberta, things are starting to open up a l

I think that one reason we’ve passed BC’s numbers is that in Alberta we’ve had large outbreaks in some meat packing plants in High River and in Brooks. Partly due to improper enforcement of social distancing at work and a lack of sufficient PPEs being provided to workers, and also due to many workers carpooling and sharing accommodation. Many of the workers are Filipino, and share homes in

We’ve had about 45,000 cases in total in Canada, with about 2550 deaths. Quebec and Ontario have the greatest number of cases, with Alberta, and then BC coming next. There have been cases everywhere except in Nunavet. Things have been shut down pretty much everywhere, with public gatherings being curtailed quite strictly. It seems as if the only work that’s happening is in what have been d

Edmonton Folk Fest as well. My husband and daughter were signed up to volunteer at it, so they are pretty sad. Actually all summer festivals in the province have been cancelled until 2021. It will be a quiet summer this year.
