Thanks for sharing your cogent and well articulated list bc. With regards to items 11 and 12, do you happen to have any references to back up your claims? I don't doubt that they are correct, but I'd like to read the source material if it is available.

That's a great point, thanks spanner. Even Nibley taught that Noah's flood was a localized event and not a worldwide phenomenon.

Somehow, that didn't come up in seminary. I'm sure it was an honest oversight.

D&C doesn't get as much attention, but Mormon Think did a good job dismantling that book. It was very enlightening, but also disappointing to find out the extent to which J.S. manipulated his followers (especially his poor wife) through purported revelations. If you haven't looked at Mormon Think's analysis of D&C, I would highly recommend it.

I assume your comment is a little tongue in cheek, but I think there's some truth to it. Once the papyri were discovered, the errors of the Book of Abraham were easy to identify. Similarly, the BoM makes numerous factual claims that can be scientifically disproven. However, the Book of Moses has more of a fairy tale aspect without as many falsifiable claims. Consequently, it may not garner at

I've seen some good articles (particularly on MormonThink) that effectively counter the notion that the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Book of Abraham were divinely inspired. However, the Book of Moses seems to be largely ignored on the internet, and I was unable to find a comprehensive critique of that book. The closest I came was Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_mo

Right now, my sister and her family are going through a rough patch financially. When I last spoke with her, I was grateful to be in a position to offer monetary assistance, largely because I'm not paying tithing. Since I stopped paying tithing, I've also allocated some of the savings to fun and rewarding activities with my family. I've come to appreciate having a little extra disposable incom

Best of luck to you Tom. I stumbled across MormonThink when I was looking for archaeological evidence to support the BoM and buttress my wavering testimony. Needless to say, the site did not have the effect I intended. However, I appreciated the insightful and (generally) fair assessment of lds theology. It was reassuring to see many of my concerns with the church addressed and to realize th

Flamingos flying overhead during a hymn! That's the most conclusive proof I've heard yet. How can you have any doubts about the church after hearing a first hand account of that amazing experience?

Surprisingly, my tbm friend failed to mention human sacrifices or infanticide. Thanks for bringing up that point.

The quotation marks you put around "more" and "proof" more accurately reflects the intent of my post. Thanks for the link you provided, it has some interesting information. Also, thanks for sharing your experience in Tulum. I've heard about how wonderful the tours are, but those positive experiences generally come from people without the capacity to doubt the church

Thanks to everyone who has posted a response to my query, particularly scooter and caedmon. Just to clarify, my original post just encapsulated a couple of the salient points made by my friend, but not the entirety of the argument since it takes me far too long to type anything on the little tablet I'm using. I was hoping to learn from others who had heard the Teotihuacan site used as proof f

I was recently informed by a tbm about the archaelogical site at Teotihuacan and how it coincides perfectly with the BoM. For example, pyramid of the sun = God, pyramid of the moon = Jesus, 12 smaller pyramids = apostles, dates of the site's flourishing and decline coincide with Christ's visit to the Americas (with accompanying peace and growth) and subsequent downfall of nephites, etc. It sou

Like many on this forum, I have been a faithful member my entire life until recently. My testimony was not particularly strong since I did not feel I received an answer to my prayers regarding the veracity of the church. However, I compensated with an overabundance of faith that if I persevered I would eventually receive an answer. I followed this model for decades, faithfully serving in the chur
