One of the early cracks for me came because someone left a book about cults in a prominent location in a public library on my mission. I guiltily picked it up and read a brief part about the suffering people have when thy leave cults. I realized that it wasn't likely because they were in Satan's power... So, thanks to whoever left that out! I hope someone gets to read your pdf!

Holy hell, does it discuss all the abortion stuff in RSR? Does Fair or anyone have a rebuttal? I hadn't read any of that before.

Yeah, it really makes me want to get the nerve to stop sneaking myself. It really is soul destroying, and dammit, it's just wrong. I'm NOT doing what's wrong, and I shouldn't have to feel like it!

OK, I'll just give you the good bit: "Now, I'm gonna tell you something today, and you might not know what to think of it now, but you're gonna remember when you're a full-grown man: Don't sneak. Because if you sneak, like you did today, it means you think you're doing the wrong thing. And if you run around spending your whole life thinking that you're doing the wrong thing, then you'll r

This short clip was on NPR a couple days ago, and it really struck me as profound. Patrick Haggerty, a 70 year old gay man, tells a story about what his dad told him when he was a young boy, before he had "come out". It sounds like it changed his life. As a closeted exmo, I hope I can be as real as that. http://www.npr.org/2014/06/27/325917505/dont-sneak-dads-unexpected-advice-to-

No, I think you are spot on. I'm not sure exactly how it started, but misogyny is a long standing religious tradition. Because it's so dang old, we all assumed it was right... Sorry about that...

I think this is rather relevant: http://www.jehovahswitnessrecovery.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=20275 Female ex-Jehovah's Witnesses are telling stories of the inequality they faced in the Watchtower Organization. It all sounds really, really familiar...

I would guess that people who leave because of Ed Decker would probably find a different church to go to, and not likely stick around here.

"... If someone can find something in the Book of Mormon, anything that they love or respond to or find dear, I applaud that and say more power to you. That's what I find, too. And that should not in any way discount somebody's liking a passage here or a passage there or the whole idea of the book, but not agreeing to its origin, its divinity. ... Hmm... I was wondering why John never posted his interview with Jeremy Runnels. Also, the page from his site requesting questions for Jeremy also disappeared. It did seem like the shti was hitting the fan once he interviewed Sandra Tanner. Now I want to listen to that interview, haha...

He claims that he started his career as a healer because of a revelation. Haha, I actually found his testimony of mormon.org at one point, where he talked about the revelation and his new book... They have since removed it from the site. Hahahaha... You can read his whole revelation story on his website, though. My opinion is that he's a nut, but I haven't researched it.

It will be culture shock, I'm sure. We walk a lot and in the summer I biked to work downtown. I expect to miss that. Sugarhouse is super convenient. The neighborhood actually looks really good- the houses are well kept, and the surrounding properties are selling at higher prices. The street is pretty quiet. No temple or church views (thank goodness!). The people we talked to said that lo

Thanks, this is a good point. We don't have any kids yet, though, so it would be at least 6 years or so before we'd have to worry about that. I understand that this affects property values, but it's projected resellability is still a heck of a lot better than most of what we can afford! If the schools are not good at that time, we can probably move.

Haha, thanks... I have no problem with Mos. I have lots of Mo friends and family. The problem is that I don't have many non-Mo friends and would LOVE to branch out and join the normal world. As long as I won't be completely buried with churchiness, I think I'll be just fine. I was just a little worried because when I went to the house and talked to some neighbors, the first thing they said w

I am looking at buying a house in West Jordan. Currently, I'm renting in Sugarhouse, and like it a lot, but can't afford a house there. I've found a pretty good deal on a good house in west Jordan, though. Are there many exmos or non-mos there? Will I be suffocated? What is the likelyhood that all my neighbors will me active, believing mos? Will I retain my sanity? Will I enjoy life? OK

Yes, that always bothered me. I never read the page that claimed it was run by LDS members until I was disaffected. It did seem disingenuous. Because of that, I've never recommended it to any TBM. I think complete honesty is essential. (No offense- the site is still wonderful, and helped me immensely! The articles were like a breath of fresh air after years of reading Farms!)

Yes! This was so important for me. I still think it's great, but it seems like there has been a shift in tone making it less friendly to TBMs. The even, balanced tone was instrumental was incredible when I first read MT. The difference between that and FAIR/FARMS/SHIELD was incredible. It became instantly clear who was hiding things.

Haha, thanks, everybody. Does anyone have any about obeying the counsel of leaders? A lot of the "obedience" quotes I found have to do with obeying God, or obeying the commandments, which any TBM would find very reasonable. The trick is, they conflate obeying God with obeying the prophet, the apostles, the Bishop, the stake president, the Ensign, and all the Mormon cultural expectati

People leaving any religion, when they truly believed it, often feel this way. Here are some examples: Story from a man who left the Worldwide Church of God, which claimed to be the only true church: http://www.exitsupportnetwork.com/mike_ep/exam/sensitiv.htm "When I was first exiting, I was sensitive to any criticisms against Herbert Armstrong.
