I would imagine that people that leave because they don't like the culture probably fit this description. They believe it's true, but they can't keep the rules, and/or don't enjoy the people.

Yeah it's probably a good idea to spend less time online, try to spend time with your family. Stop drinking and get to counseling. Good luck to you, value your family. I'd also second what dogzilla said. Making changes to where you have identified weaknesses is a great place to start.

I recently just read "A Manual for Creating Atheists" and he puts the focus on faith. Faith as he defines it is pretending to believe. I personally find the definition of faith as belief without evidence better. As I have developed some thoughts on the book I'd have to say that it helps to identify that faith is unfalsifiable. Because faith is unfalsifiable they have no method for de

That's one of the big things for me. A belief in God actually causes more confusion then a lack of belief in God. Even as a Mormon I would debate what was right and what was wrong. Mormon disagree from among themselves. This objective morality that theist like to hold up doesn't seem very objective at all. They do what atheist do, they have guiding principles that they have develop through their

I know there is an alternative motive here, but I really have to say that doing actual service is the best thing that we can hope from the LDS church. Things like this will improve their image and actually improve the lives of other people. If there church actually started to help people in a real way and not in the emotional manipulation way then I could give the Mormon church some credit.

Stop, this is exactly what they do. Don't say this or even think this. Look for common ground, for compromise, allow there to be room for a difference of opinion.

I doubt he was responding to you, his response was to the first one. Sorry but using sex to control the situations is very manipulative. I definitely made me say WTF mentally when I read it.

I also note that you must have just read how to make atheist. It's a good book. I think phrasing it as pretending to know something you don't know means you will really have to work to help them understand all the other definitions and why they are not faith and it's a little divisive. Also I think that it's a bit of a straw man to them because they believe : "Now faith is the substance o

http://skepticsplay.blogspot.com/2007/12/axial-tilt-reason-for-season.html Maybe I should have said axial tilt. I get it, it takes a while to not see divinity in everything. Some times people make the mistake of saying that DNA or Evolution is evidence of an intelligent designer. The error that is being committed is that we only see intelligence because we perceive humans to be intelligent

I know a friend of mine named Austin Howard served around that time. I don't know the details I just know he served in Hawaii. He doesn't seem to be a member anymore, by his facebook posts, so I wondered if he might be on here. Did you know him?

In my experience faith is the means by which we are deceived. Faith is believing in something without evidence. It usually leads to more questions then answers, it's not a good way to live life. I get the idea that a God that is watching over us is a comforting thought, but it does little to help those that are suffering. Those charities you mention are acting on their desire to help humanity. Hu

They removed it so bishops could ask it and the church wouldn't get in trouble for it.

I was always under the impression that all humanitarian aid donated when 100% to the cause. I remember hearing it during a conference or world news or somewhere. So I always thought what better way to donate to humanitarian aid then to donate through the church. Now I realize I have no way of knowing if they are telling the truth, and charity in Mormonism always comes with expectations.

So I feel like being a little more proactive lately and am trying to figure out way to filter a facebook advertising campaign so that it only goes to my friends. Basically I want to share 'anti'-Mormon literature with my friends and family without it coming directly from me. Facebook seems to have the ability to filter your target audience by connection, but I don't seem to be able to get i

I felt the same way, a huge weight off my shoulders that she at least understand where I'm coming from. I even got the kids every other Sunday and I'm allowed to say what I want (I try to give her religion space as well, so I don't always say what I want, when I want). She's retrenched a little since then, but still pretty neutral about the whole thing.

You can actively believe that the question doesn't matter, I'm sure there's a label for that. Or you can just label yourself Ron Burr, and leave it at that. Tell people it's easier to remember and follow :).

I really hate how Mormons say that other people are tearing them down, when you are critical of them. They don't see the inherit hypocrisy in the way they do missionary work. When I see missionary efforts on facebook or in the street, I see them tearing down other's beliefs. They are pushing negative messages into the world. From my perspective I don't see any difference between missionary wor

http://bycommonconsent.com/2013/11/26/eliza-r-snow-and-the-inclusivity-of-the-gospel/ "Eliza R. Snow and the inclusivity of the gospel" It makes me cringe to think of Eliza R. Snow as some type of role model, Emma would be pissed. I wish I could say that on my facebook feed, but I guess I'll just do it here.

http://www.lds.org/ensign/1978/11/news-of-the-church It was once a rule, I think it's a long forgotten rule, but it is now more a symbol of Feminist Mormons which is unacceptable to most Mormons. It has also been labelled an enemy of the religion by Packard. To say their is no rule against it is disingenuous. I have flerted with the thought of wearing a purple dress to church on these days

I have been debating this thought in my own life and I think both phrases are divisive. One condoned by the church, one makes us feel better. I think the best compromise that could be made is the say, we have come to different opinions.

I know for me I was scared that my wife would leave me, if I was to tell her about my non-believe. That would result in my children being taught a one sided I'm the devil and the church is the savior without me, because I live in a trailer because I send my wife child support. So if you see this through to it's conclusion, people stay closet non-believers because they want the lie to end. I wa

My SIL keeps updating Mormon stuff on facebook and part of me really doesn't like it, I have not put up any exmormon stuff on my facebook page (I have liked some exmuslim things). I feel very disrespected, but haven't said anything to her. Also my wife has been playing church music in the car. I asked her yesterday if we could stop listening to it when I got into the car. Also my daughter ask

Cool, I think the answer might just not be as simple as I hoped. I'd have to ask this person what they mean before understanding what they mean. Either way I'm going to go with a WTF in my brain and let it go.

I'm mean orthodox as the term. This person was referring to all orthodox religions. They weren't referencing any individual one. They were specifically talking about Jews in the post, but they generally applied it to all religions. I know that some muslim do practice female genital mutilation, it's in a obscure less doctrinally sounds hadith (so most people ignore it), but if you believe in f
