What confuses me is that Jesus never wrote anything down. He is reported to have said he was just like his father or that if you see the son you see the father? But yet I see great difference in the god of the old testament (Jehovah) vs new testament. The unchangeable God is always changing his mind? first he says go kill your enemies, stone people who are different. Then it is love your enemi

It's "chic" to call yourself feminist these days. (There's a lot of posers out there).

I agree with releve: "encouraging women to behave like men doesn't benefit anyone." Also the blog: "mormonfeministhousewives" seems pretty ridiculous for the reasons I'll explain. I'm thinking of the upper mormon middle class housewife relatives of mine who call themselves feminists because it sounds soo cool! They won the lottery so they don't need to work and so they

The church has gotten away from sunday night firesides for the general population that use to be a staple back in the 80's. But still hold them for the unfortunate Mormon Single. In cache valley they group the 30-120 year olds together. I know they have "firesides" where the themes usually run around "unfortunate afflictions" or "why life's dreams don't come true.&quo

Things they don't teach: 1) Express your feminine side. (though I did attend a singles ward that had a "queeer night/straight night" themed activity) 2) How to wear the color pink in a "manly" way. 3) Should men ever have highlights? (i've known a few) 4) What's the proper use for fuzzy handcuffs in the bedroom?

1) "House of Israel" by Joseph Whitehead (1948) It contains all the Aryan nation doctrine that was popular before WW2 and the Nazis. The mixing of the different bloods to make the different races of people and how and when that all happened. Very interesting though very sensitive and a racist, politically incorrect today. 2) "Mormon hierarchy the extensions of power", Sold

John Neff met him in Nauvoo and started the first mill in Salt Lake in what's now called "Millcreek." Eli Harvey Pierce was baptized by Joseph Smith. His father Robert was "same sex sealed" to Joseph Smith. That might make another interesting thread. "Which of your ancestors were sealed in a same sex pioneer ceremony?"

I love your summation "a social class in which grace is not a priority." People like this you just smile and nod and walk away.

Well christian religion is better than no religion. If you have any doubts look at Stalin and the USSR. There was horrible poverty and death. Look At WW2 and Hitler, once again poverty and destruction everywhere. It's best to be a patriot. Express your opinions and if they are "good" opinions people will listen.

I would say the veneration and adoration of "the prophet" is rather explicit and over the top. Sing Mormon Hymn #27 "Praise to the Man" if you have any doubts.

Bishops who are skilled should be willing to talk about any subject a parishioner wishes to discuss. But of course there is no training or credentials for mormon ministers. It reminds me of the temple when people use to say "oh you can't talk about the temple outside the temple." But of course you can't talk inside the temple either? No answer. Big problem.

It says just enough to not really say anything at all. The problem I see with it is that it was toted about like it said something extra ordinary. In Gen.Conf. years ago it was referenced like 40 times, more than anything else? Yet it says very little.

When there is a need and there aren't many choices to choose from, sometimes it's a question of the lesser of two evils. Like why did I vote for Obama when I'm not a bleeding heart liberal? because I disliked Romney even more.

All very good comments. Current LDS teaching indicates the year 96AD as the official beginning to the great apostasy since that's the year John was banished to patamos. There are some references to John's life in the "history of the church" by eusibius (300s) that are well worth reading about. A basic understanding of the Early church is important as well. First be aware that many

had a cousin who I went with the first time right before "the mission." He was creeped out about it. Thought it was strange that there were no clocks on the walls. I don't think he ever went back.

Church is plain boring to kids. As an adult I wanted something more than recycling through the quad every 4 years. There are so many many many mysteries in life that are worth exploring yet it was always drummed in when I was a child that "when the saints are ready more info would be forthcoming" (like the lost 116 pages etc...). Well I got tired of waiting and reading the same stuff o

my guess is that their land holdings may grow substantially. Maybe they will build secret underground bunkers and stock pile ammunition. I think they may get more involved in Agriculture. 20% of the worlds fresh water is in the great lakes. These waters sooner or later are going to need to be used for farming. LD$ inc is powerful enough to play a monopoly on everyone. But just like what happe

The huntsman link is very good. I'm sure he must pay the highest income tax of 39%. Then factor state tax, and other charitable giving. Plus 10% to LD$ inc. It turns into a large fraction of his income. Wow! Bill Gates needs to follow his example. Stop bankrolling Common Core Crap (he doesn't understand anything about education yet is working to overhaul the whole thing). He needs to find some

The stipulation in Mormonism is that to marry or be married one needs a body. So that's why they do temple work. I would look in Mormon Doctrine or Doctrines of Salvation under: temple marriage and go from there? But in the new testament it clearly says "For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. (matt 22:30)" So thi

I agree with third vision. Kimball was anything but a bastard. There would never be a bastard running the mormon church. Also Kimball and the bretheren were thinking about cultural problems that always occur (the fighting). The money problems that do occur. And the identity issues kids face. For people in general Kimball was right in this regard.

Ogden does have a racist past. There was was an article in the Standard recently about a black woman who just turned 105 from Mississippi who came to Ogden in 1936. She said she wasn't allowed to walk down a certain side walks in those days. She had to use other bathrooms and drinking fountains. And Utah was just as racist as Mississippi in those days. My relatives told me they use to boycott

Last time I was down at the "Y." They had a shrine to G.Hinkley. I guess pilgrims venture out to see the holy relics of deified saints? They've got a whole building named after him for some reason? It was pretty creepy. Displayed from floor to ceiling were some of his books and furniture. Nothing of any importance or of any value, I didn't think.

ya there is a lot of mysterious deaths in Utah (always has been, now that I think about it). There is always at least one in the obituaries everyday. They are usually hushed up. This is the worst aspect of life in Zion. There are some of the highest rates of suicide for young males in the whole country. The mormon religion really can be toxic to happiness. The religion needs to get away from

back to your original question: Victorians 99% really bad racist. Greatest generation 95% almost as bad racist Baby boomers 60% still pretty bad but keeping quiet about it Generation x way more careful about being "politically correct" over the elephant in the room.

I remember people that would have been born in Victorian times. Things were different back then. Utah was an agrarian society. Most everyone had their own farm and didn't need to hold a real workplace job so they weren't really exposed to diversity. There weren't Blacks or Mexicans. Mexicans came and went with the seasonal farm work. They weren't welcome to stay. My people use to love to see

But the thing about Truman is that the fantasy world gave him all the niceties of life. 1) Married a babe. 2) Management job. 3) Everyone loved him everywhere he went. I don't remember life behind Zions curtain to be like that. At least not for me? (Maybe for someone like "Mittons" Romney)

Well these are important issues. Since many people are finding themselves locked out of salvation in the Catholic church because they have unconventional/traditional lives? Their are parallels in the Mormon Church. What are your thoughts?

The Article summed up says: "The Vatican sent a new questionnaire to bishops. Among other things, the questionnaire asked how the church can care for families with gay children and discern positive and negative elements in heterosexual civil unions. It also asked how the church can better provide sacraments for Catholics who divorce and remarry outside the church."
