You "don't fight" looking down on people who aren't the way you are, and feeling "pity" for them because of that fact? My, what an existential struggle.

Oh, so straight people who don't want children have "something wrong with them?" Interesting perspective.

The post above about "Photos of all the Presidents" reminded me of my favorite gift for any occasion--little green pieces of paper with photos of the presidents* on them. *of the US, not the church. ;) I have done several things for weddings. Once I bought all the items on the gadget portion of their registry list (you know, little kitchen things) and bought a big utensil rack to

I can see why you're anonymous. I think you are a mutation yourself ... born without compassion.

She was a good mom in a lot of ways. We didn't always get along, and it took her a long time to accept and be okay with the fact that her only daughter was a big ol' carpet muncher. :) She eventually became my champion, though. About seven or eight years before she died, she was playing the organ (which belonged to her and she had allowed to be moved to the church house for their use) in a Met

I'm a lesbian. Been out for twenty-nine years. You have the perfect right to think I am living an immoral life. And I have the right to believe, in turn, that you are living an ignorant life. The difference is that I am not getting in your face telling you that. Oh, and those "friends" you say you have? Have you told THEM ... to their FACES ... that you think they are living an immor

I have zero qualification to comment on this topic except that I am a woman, and I was raised by a woman who at times worked and at times stayed home with me and my brothers. I am a lesbian who has never been married to a man and I do not have children myself. So please take what I say with that in mind. Athena hit several points I would have made right on the nose. I was cheering her as I rea

Your story reminds me of one from back in the early 1980s when snake oil evangelist Oral Roberts was still alive to fleece the flock. I don't recall all the details, but the late Atlanta Constitution columnist, Lewis Grizzard, wrote about it. An elderly woman who had been sending a portion of her meager fixed income to Roberts's "ministry" had died, and her children were cleaning out

I was fifteen when Lennon was assassinated, so my memories are of his later music, I wasn't around during the Beatles era. Like others have said, there was good and bad in him. I think he got caught up in the turbulence of the late sixties and was finally at peace with himself when Mark Chapman came along. Yoko, though ... yuck. That bitch could screech the paint off a car. LOL

I don't know whether the Community of Christ church (used to be RLDS) still has baby blessings, but I was surprised and annoyed to learn that in the LDS Church, the mother isn't even allowed to stand with the group as the baby is blessed. It wasn't that way in the RLDS when I was growing up.

And it came to pass that I read the Book of Mormon, and became exceeding frustrated, even apoplectic. Then I fell asleep. The end. ;)

One thing I have noticed about secular funerals/memorial services that are held without the officiation of a clergyperson is that people are allowed to actually grieve. You aren't getting that "We should be celebrating because X has triumphed in heaven" or some such bullshit. You're allowed to be unhappy that the person is gone and you won't see them anymore. What a fucking concept. LOL

It just occurred to me that I might have been a little brusque or dismissive in my response just now. I just wanted to add that the death of a parent, while expected and CERTAINLY easier than the death of one's child, is still a horrific experience, no matter how sick they are or how long they've been sick or traumatically they were injured or quickly they were killed in an accident with no chanc

If you have not been through the death of a parent, you really aren't going to understand this journey. Your husband is struggling with trauma, and his emotions will run the gamut from sorrow, guilt, and helplessness among other emotions. My mother died ten years ago. She had been ill for a very long time and I was ready for her to go. However, she was not ready to. It was very difficult for m

I don't know what will happen in the afterlife. I hope I'll see my mother again and all the other people I loved who've gone before. But if I don't, it's not like I am going to know--I'll be dead. LOL

I'm a lesbian. I'm the youngest of five children and also the only daughter, so I grew up as the little baby princess but also got a birds-eye view of the way guys are with each other and with females. None of my brothers are gay although I think a couple of them have had homosexual experiences. I don't think that's so unusual. I slept with men first. What the hell, I gave it a try. haha I

You need to investigate Lutheran or Episcopal churches. I think you would be happier there and you would still get the liturgical worship you want.

That's wild. I grew up RLDS too and left in 1985 with the intention of converting to Catholicism. I was too late to join that year's catechumenate, so instead I studied individually with a priest (who, I later learned, was defrocked in 1996 after he was arrested for indecent exposure). In 1986 I began the RCIA process with a different priest who turned out to be strictly a company man. I made it

The WoW was followed in the RLDS Church of my childhood, to a lesser degree than in the LDS as far as I can tell. My mother was a health food nut before it was popular to be one, so the WoW for her was a no-brainer. I still keep certain aspects of it, such as whole grain breads and cereals. I also love raw veggies and fruits, and try to eat meat sparingly. But I drink iced tea, both caffeinated a

If they're going to be skimpy on the food, at least they got the time right. At 3 PM, nobody is going to expect a full meal. Non-Mormons plan 1 PM or 2 PM weddings for that very reason--they only want to offer a cake-and-punch reception without having to feed a full meal. It's cheaper.
