Big correction here: Ambien is one of the most dangerous drugs still available. Parasomnia episodes well documented. Abuse and potential for spade pendency well documented. Avoid it like the plague. In my opinion the worst thing there is on the market and I am a physician of sorts.

Review from Dave: "This movie corrects a lot of misconceptions about Mormons. It also illustrates the benefits of living the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It shows that even very imperfect people can have joy return to their lives when they begin to make correct choices. Mormons embrace other cultures and enjoy the diversity regardless of where members might be from." The benefits of li

Sorry Latterdale I just don't believe his motives. I gave him the benefit of the doubt after Bushman's biography, even though I thought Bushman was pretty unrealistic. I think even Joseph wanted to believe in his own motives. But in the end they were the same drives that had pursued him all his life--resentment, pride, vanity, lust, greed. Cover it however you will, his tastes and mot

Cover your bad grammar in big words and prosy language. Always obsess about your social status. Arrogate to yourself titles--president prophet king priest grand this and that, you can never have too many titles. No title can be too lavish even if it sounds ridiculously overblown assume it anyway. Try to learn other languages to seem cultured but since you are lazy just pick up a coupl

This could be interesting. The fact that she is an MD and a gospel doctrine teacher to me are very strong indicators that she thinks the church is bullshit. I've known many of that combination over the years and they are more than usually NOT true believers. Wonder if she thinks her husband is a goofy bastard for being such a Mormon? Wonder if he believes it at all?

After reading your cogent reply to my post I have to admit: you make a hell of a lot of sense. I will admit that Dawkins has handled the affair in a half-assed way that is very hard to admire. Still can't go with you all the way to believing that Dawkins himself "must be" creeping people. He seems like a gentleman to me.;

Dawkins "defense" of Shermer in a nutshell: don't rush to judgement. Wow. What a creep. These posts of Tal's remind me so much of The Crucible. "Only a witch would defend a witch! Burn them all!"

Here's FAIR's take home answer at the top of the page: "Several women seem to have refused plural marriage. If they did nothing to threaten the life and safety of Joseph and the Saints, they suffered no discernible consequences. Those who tried to "expose" Joseph had their character and testimony challenged." So, let's see, FAIR... "threaten the life and safety

HAve you ever heard this? This is what I overheard at a family dinner recently. Smith was the most intelligent--in ways that matter--human besides the Lord Savior Master (insert some other Mormon endearment because they use them all) Jesus Christ. And really, it's not fair to compare anyone with Jesus because he had the whole god thing stacking his deck. I told them I think that Newton

Joseph, at last!. May I please kneel before before your priesthood power and bring you a fullness of joy! Will you please take my wife and daughter to your bed to ensure my eternal salvation? And, tell me brother Joseph, do you have any good investment ideas I can give you--er, I mean the Lord--ALL my money for? I live but to serve you my liege.

Sorry to anyone who thought it was real and that it would help them in their struggle to be accepted and loved by TBM family. I mean that. I know how healing it would be if he really said those things. I wrote it because of my own struggles. If this church were true, it would not cause so much pain in families. And even if we forget questions of truth, if this church cared as much abo

A Quote from President Monson: It is time for all to stand up for the family. You women whose husbands no longer believe, and you men whose wives no longer believe, should never threaten them with divorce or loss of your love and companionship. This is contrary to the stated purpose of the LDS church: to unite families. We implore you to never let differences of opinion regarding matters of

Ouch!! Following the Prophets? What a terrible place to be. I think there is no good way to obfuscate with this topic. Get out of having to give the talk. If you can't get out of it open with the line, "I've been asked today to speak on following big brother, I mean great leader, I mean the prophets." One more possibility: State that "Following the Prophet" in L

Good post about Shermer and his behavior. Trying to use Shermer's behavior and a phony straw man about "we 'should' kill Down's syndrome babies" to grind a personal axe against Dawkins in political propaganda style? Pretty disappointing.

Amen and Amen! When the class action suit is filed please inform me. I'll charge by the second for that NIGHTMARE that was my LDS mission. I loved music, loved girls, loved hanging with my friends. I was told I would love the mission so much more. But what total and obvious bullshit that turned out to be. The men in charge lied to me. The men in charge have only told as much truth as

Apparently, according to every Mormon, there is a creature or person out there called "The World." They all seem to know who it is, and use the name as if I should know who this person is too. I know it's a weird name. I'm still trying to figure it out. Maybe it's a wrestling moniker, like "The Rock." Anyway, "The World" (who I will call TW for short, hoping

Interesting how different the reads are! If you've ever read the Dexter books ( Darkly Dreaming Dexter) then you know my opinion of Bednar. He IS Dexter. And no I don't mean he's a serial killer or even sinister in some way. But Dexter has a very difficult time understanding how regular humans feel and has to fake it. Dexter knows that people smile at each other so he smiles at them. He

Honestly, I hear this all the time. I was going to ask this question in the Norway conference post, but I think it deserves its own thread. People talk all the time about how smart Bednar is. They say something like, "Well he says stupid shit all the time, but he must know what he's doing because he's no fool." I ask you now: prove it. What evidence do we have that he is not a b

Islamic scripture and tradition have penalties from shunning to death for "apostasy." Harsher than LDS. They may choose to ignore them, but the penalties are written into their Koran. That's what I meant by singling Islam out.

I should clarify--I never drink around her, and in fact I really do not drink away from her, out of respect for her but also she is pretty aggressive in her aversion to it. I don't care anything about alcohol, having not grown up with it, but at times I think I would like to be able to share a glass of wine with her but it is not in the cards. I DO say things that are disrespectful in her mind o

Great ideas and insights. I've heard my wife say that stuff when she has a good idea: "I didn't come up with it! I said a prayer and it was the Spirit." In other words she is attributing a kinds of things to "the Spirit". Does this make her feel more special? Is it better if the Spirit comes up with it than if she does herself? Seems like many humans can live with th
