I was at my public library yesterday and they had 4 new copies of his book on display in the new book section. Barf! No copy of Hawking's book to be found but boy howdy, you can get Romney's book right now.

Where I live I can see 5(!) ward buildings complete with white steeples with fake windows painted black (how appropriate)...plus, a temple! Are you jealous? I consider them eyesores. They are golden arches of religion around here.

I think women tend to be more emotionally driven so IMO males have an edge when it comes to becoming an apostate. Many women (gatherer types) feel the need for group security and emotional support whereas many men tend to be less prone to that kind of attachment (lone hunter types). That said, there are plenty of exceptions. There are times when the majority posting here are female and vise ve

12094. Exactly!
Reasoning only applies if it HELPS further the religion. Otherwise you are supposed to use faith and have the common decency not to shake the soda (I LOVE that expression! Thanks.). If reality is not faith promoting, then don't use it or at least distort it. Facts and reason are only to be used to cherry pick and support preconceived conclusions. If they don't promote the faith, then they

It says to the LDS membership....See? We're important like the big kids on the block. We're on par with Catholics and Jews! This is their way of telling their members they are one of the major religions (legends in their own minds) by being in the areas where other religions reign. Appearance is everything to Mormons.

If they start to testify or witness, I dismiss them without further consideration. They are sharing an emotional attachment which is fine but that is all it signifies to me. As a Mormon I was taught to think testifying was a "powerful" tool that would convince people of truth. Oddly when other religions would pull similar stuff on me, I didn't take them seriously. The people I tes

Read the first page of chapter 1 in Dawkins' new book on the topic called "The Greatest Show on Earth." It will take you about three minutes. He said there are NO reputable scientists who do not accept evolution. Evolution is the foundation of biology. Here is a taste of that first page: "Imagine you are a teacher of Roman history and the Latin language, anxious to impart

Over time I've given up the idea of heroes. For a time I searched hoping to find the one guru or philosopher who I could completely respect. I wanted a hero. I found great things I admired about each one. But I also found things about each one that made me think less of them. It was hard for me to accept that there is not anyone who is going to be a perfect hero for me. No one has their cr

But didn't Jesus also say to give all you have to the poor and go follow him? Basically this kind of instruction would generate all kinds of people who will have nothing and would be on the dole while they "preach" and minister and follow Jesus. Why does it matter if a widow takes his words seriously more than another person who gave everything? What did Jesus expect when he himself

Religious isolation of young women (and men) where they are indoctrinated to think men are directed by God to boink multiple women and that women should just go along with it. I don't think there is anything that can be done about it since the cause lies in the right of religion to brainwash and isolate. The biggest tools to combat the problem are education and exposure to ideas outside th

The "family" church strikes again. I'm sorry you are going through this. Good luck through the transition. I hope your wife finds life with daddy, her cult and some future looser Mormon just what she is looking for. Sigh. Meanwhile, expand your horizons. Your life will be open to greater opportunities and enlightenment.

Charles M. Larson's "By His Own Hand Upon Papyrus" is a great book on this topic. Fun to read and an eye opener. Tells the whole thing. I was floored when I realized what JS tried to pull off. This book might be online to read for free somewhere.

I want to know more about the financial arrangement of the family (of course now they are making bank from the show). I want to know if any of those brain dead women work. That Kody guy strikes me as sort of an immature clown. What a goober. I liked how they wouldn't talk about the wedding ceremony (Robin's) itself- cause it's too sacred. Groan. The creepiest part for me was when Mari wa

Beck is out there showing the world just how weird Mormons can be. This could hurt Romney's electability.

Two creepy religions supporting each other to show they are "tolerant" when in reality they are joining to protect their religious rears.

Some temple visitor centers have nativity scenes displays. They like to display nativity scenes from around the world. I think this makes them feel more international or or helps them think their beliefs are shared by people all over the world or something. Lame. They were big on ginger bread house displays for a while. Now it seems to be popular to do international nativity scenes.

Remember there are not really rules about what you have to believe. There is every kind of Christian out there with every combination of beliefs. I think all you have to do is decide what you like and ignore the rest. There are probably parts of any set of beliefs you can agree with - just dismiss the ones you don't find helpful. It sounds like you are looking for a community. I can say tha

I have no clue why I am on their mailing list- maybe because I am BYU alum. Anyway I just flipped through it. It is headed for the trash. You are right, Major B.... it is full of total fluff. The books look about as mentally stimulating as staring at a rock. I did notice a lot more books about Christ than I expected. Totally lame. Here's one you'll want for your reading pleasure: The Mes

My brother in law is gay. He has lived a life of rejection. His mother doesn't "tolerate" him. She calls him someone who has made "bad choices" who is a sinner. He has all kinds of issues from being gay and dealing with it as a Mormon. His family who condemns him because that is what they learned at church made it worse. So forget politics. I've seen first hand what th

Other people have spiritual experiences also. The thing in common is that they all are used to validate the preconceived expectations of the person who experiences. If you had seen an elephant wink at you, it wouldn't hit your radar as a spiritual experience. But if you had been Hindu, you may have thought it was a message from Ganesha or something. Notice when people have NDEs they tend to re

Tell him if he ever wants to have a role in the lives of his grandchildren to STFU. You won't tell him how to live and you expect the same in return. And by the way, his daughter was not his property. OK, seriously. Don't take the bait. Let him make an a$s out of himself. Just take the adult role or he will treat you like a child. Tell him to mind his own business and drop it. Later it

Some simple things they do imply they have power over you. Do not call him by a title. Call him by his first name or Mr. Do not allow a meeting where he sits at a desk and you have to sit across from him. Don't let him take a chair that he or your wife might consider gives him authority by position. I highly suggest you not jump when he says to jump. He wants to meet with YOU, not the othe
