This guys's funny stories are NOT funny. he is telling how his dad was a dick who didn't care about his wife's preferences and forgot his promises to her. And the crowd is LAUGHING about it.

When the speech is soooooo damn boring, it's easy pickin's to tell a lame "And then my wife pointed out that my of my socks was light gray and the other was...I sheepishly agreed...was dark gray."

Anything even faintly resembling real life, including marital discord, is such a relief to the bored-stiff audience that they will reward it with a laugh.

It's the "see, mormons are normal" reaction. That's a laugh of relief, and also a laugh of "thank god somebody woke me up before I started drooling."

Maybe there is sign in the conference center that tells people when to laugh? Sitcoms in the past have done this trick.
