Even though I like his approach, there are 14 other men who clearly showed us in GC that they don't want to be quite so forthcoming.
The organization will protect itself at any cost. Being more open with the mistakes that were made and being open and honest with the problems with its truth claims will only happen if the organization can get something out of it or if they are pushed into a corner.
Otherwise, we still need to protect ourselves from mormons and the mormon corporation.
They really don't care about truth or us.

Agreed. This was a simply a mea culpa to the world. All it does for the future is allow the institutional church the ability to state that they have acknowledged mistakes with history and with priesthood leaders.
Everyone should know about it now. Members because it was said in conference and and writing in the Ensign (next month). Non-members because it was reported in the New York Times and will be available on the web forever.
Your statement that they would only do this "if the organization can get something out of it" is the truth.
Mormons Believe God Lives mormon.org God has a plan of happiness that has answers to life's big questions
So, there you go. God has a plan, it's about happiness, and he's telling you about it via The New York Times. Apparently that's the way the mormon god communicates with His children.
I guess He's not so omnipotent, omnipresent, or omniscient as proclaimed. He takes out an ad.
Well, now that they mention it, lets talk about the mistakes and who made them. Who is going to be allowed to talk about them without getting called in to a court of love?
Most likely this is going to be a one sided conversation that is now considered over as far as the church is concerned.
Its annoying the way it was phrased as "the church" has made mistakes. So, who are they referring to as "the church"? Who will be answering to these mistakes? Where are the sincere apologies? The restitution? The attempts to make things right?
Members can do to the church exactly what the church has done to them in the past. Demand the church comes clean and then pays by doing the punishment of the members choosing. If the church refuses to do that, excommunicate them out of your life. If the church refuses to show up for their court, ex them in absentia. No witnesses allowed unless the members approve of them. This can become a two way street real fast. Permission from church leaders is not needed or even acknowledged.

Uchtdorf's wordage in the admission is too vanilla to have any significant meaning. It's what the Mormon Gerontocracy always do. They appear to be saying something, but in actuality is is just a bunch of big words strung together that give the "effect" of a statement so that their subjects are sure they have witnessed something profound. I am sure it will effect its intended purpose with the TBMs who are doubting their doubts though.
It is the equivalent of some congressman admitting he 'mis-spoke" when what he did was outright lie big time.
