This was included in this week's student email update.

"Reminder: Wearing BYU-Idaho Issue Shorts on Campus
Issue shorts are appropriate for athletic activities inside the Hart Building and BYU-Idaho Center courts, and at the playfields and stadium. However, to show respect for a dedicated campus, all students are invited to wear warm-ups or sweat pants over their issue shorts when traveling across campus or in other buildings."

Because sweat pants are so much more respectful than shorts.

Yes, because bare legs are basically porn. That means all of those sexually repressed "porn addicts" will be set off. We need to prevent any sort of sexual stimulation, because legs are just a gateway drug to rampant homosexual sex orgies.

When are they going to start handing burkas out as standard-issue uniforms to all that walking pornography?

The Mormons might actually end up actually following that old legend about Victorians covering up piano and table legs with skirts to keep them from arousing men.

^^^ LOL!!! Hilarious! ^^^

No one can tell you what to think, TBMs... I know that seems hard to believe but it's the truth. It's not polite to go around shaking your finger at the whole world telling them that they shouldn't do xyz because it gives you bad thoughts. Control yourself.

I remember my dad was trying so hard to push me into BYU. I told him that college is hard enough, I dont need my grades punished for drinking a diet coke on occassion. I didnt like the idea of forcing someone to obey the commandments, but then I realized that it's called OBEY the commandments. That word leaves little to no wiggle room for agency.

In this case any student/faculty member who wants to wear shorts in the gym facilities. They can wear their own pants/sweats, but shorts have to be the "issued" ones. Tshirts as well.

"Q: Can I wear the new approved clothing throughout campus?

A: No. The approved clothing is only for the Hart Building. Students and employees must obey the dress code by not wearing shorts while walking through campus. We have been instructed to wear sweat pants or warm-ups while walking to the Hart Building or bring your clothes and use the locker rooms to change when you arrive.

Oh, hey, just like the military has issue exercise shorts, and are only allowed them to wear them on-base. "We are all enlisted...."

ETA: Oh yeah, and that whole agency thing.. You would think BYUs are run by Satan, since you know, he was the one that wanted to force everyone to do the 'right' thing.

Might be true in basic training, but certainly not true on the many military bases I have been assigned to or visited.

Not even the military is this whacko about what shorts to wear.

Can non=Mormon visitors wear shorts on campus?

From what I understand, everyone _can_. It's against the rules, but there's no security to escort anyone off of campus if they don't follow it. That's why the wording in the email says "invite" rather than "demand." All visitors are expected to keep the dress/grooming standards, though.

In Mormonism, when they say invite, they mean demand.

They can and will enforce things in such a way that it will prevent access to certain things.

For example, if you have a 5 o'clock shadow, they can (and will) stop you from taking a test. My roommate wasn't allowed to take a test one time until he shaved.

Or if you wear shorts they might not let you into the cafeteria or to attend class.

Fortunately, during the school year it is so cold in Rexburg that the rule (however stupid) just turns out to be common sense on most days. However, it is just another sign of how BYU-I tries to be a bit more "righteous" (aka authoritarian) than those other BYU institutions.

oh god, going to BYU would have been worse than hell for me. I can't even believe that this stuff is going on in the real world at a real college!! hahahaha.

sometimes, I wish I had done a semester there or something... because I probably would have left the church a lot sooner.

Your first mistake is assuming it's a real college.

I graduated from BYU Provo and never knew it was against the rules to stay out past midnight. I did it all the time because I would study late and then go do my grocery shopping because a friend of mine worked the late shift at Albertsons. I also let a guy sleep overnight on our couch because he was locked out of his apartment. He was so apologetic I thought he was a little nutty until I found out I could get into real trouble for that. Boy, ignorance sure was bliss. If I had been kicked out for such stupid things I'd have been happy to leave and go back East.

Kids pay to go to BYUI and be told how to dress/act in this much detail, right?

Is there also a webpage with instructions on how to fart gracefully and politely as well? Wouldn't want to offend now would we?

after performing athletics, women remember to honor the spirit by immediately placing your temple veil over your head and face.

What to wear to dance class:

Note the awkward language in the ballet section, and lack of actual pictures of ballet dancers in leotards.
