We don't know why gay people were not accepted by members of the church in the past. It was never doctrinal, and church leaders fought hard for the rights of same sex attracted individuals.

Seriously, don, if our Christmas discussion on gay marriage at the family party had gotten that far, I was planning to respond to the claim "but the church says..." with "yeah, but they'll change their minds and in 10 years will say they fought for gay marriage and our grandchildren will say that the idea Mormons were ever against gay marriage is anti-Mormon lies."
