Where exactly, does it say he put the stones in the hat and covered his face with it.

I presume this is documented in official church literature. But where?

Thanks.

It's in "A Treasured Testament" by Russell M. Nelson, The Ensign, July, 1993. Nelson is quoting an address given by David Whitmer in 1887.

“Joseph Smith would put the seer stone into a hat, and put his face in the hat, drawing it closely around his face to exclude the light; and in the darkness the spiritual light would shine. A piece of something resembling parchment would appear, and on that appeared the writing. One character at a time would appear, and under it was the interpretation in English. Brother Joseph would read off the English to Oliver Cowdery, who was his principal scribe, and when it was written down and repeated to Brother Joseph to see if it was correct, then it would disappear, and another character with the interpretation would appear. Thus the Book of Mormon was translated by the gift and power of God, and not by any power of man.” (David Whitmer, An Address to All Believers in Christ, Richmond, Mo.: n.p., 1887, p. 12.)

I've also read on this board that it's in Richard Bushman's book, Rough Stone Rolling.

We must always remember that all this is entirely based on Smith's statements. Nobody else ever "saw" the parchment images.

Do you think that maybe he was not telling the whole truth?

I dont think truth was in Joe's vocabulary, far less whole truth.

No other world-wide religion claims that, at least none I know about. But, isn't that the beauty? Don't you want to have something unique that no other religion can offer?

"Others can take you to heaven? We can do that, too (if you work your ass off for us, that is)...AND we have a prophet who gets word from God by looking in his hat. Who wouldn't drop their old worldview for something like that?

Zenjamin has it: the decline in prophecy from LDS profits can be traced to the decline of men wearing hats. Baseball caps do not count.

Paul/Saul fell off his horse.
Had a "Vision" (several versions by the way).
Ran around claiming direct authority from God.
Contradicted the "established" leaders such as Peter.
Wrote down his opinions, including some very harsh beliefs against women's rights.
People believed him.
People follow his opinions for 2000 years give or take.
