Wendover is a major escape for many Utahns. For me, it was a great way to escape the Mormon oppression. Unfortunately, it has gone downhill. They dim the lights now to save electricity, they have ruined their once great single blackjack games, and they are paranoid and will bar players for stupid reasons. They are hurting financially, and you can feel the hurt when you go there.
I used to go to Wendover all the time, and I would talk about it all the time. Now I go to Las Vegas instead, but I don't go as often, because it is more expensive (I live in Provo). I spend most of my time alone, since I'm quiet by nature and don't believe in Mormonism.
I am seriously thinking about moving to Henderson, Nevada eventually. I love Las Vegas. There is so much to do there. The skies are beautiful there. I love the glitzy lighting. If I lived there, I could afford to attend upscale parties and go to great shows. Maybe Wendover did me a favor. By turning me away, Wendover has given me a new fascination with Las Vegas. Mormonism drove me to Wendover, and now Wendover is driving me to Las Vegas.
Las Vegas has a strong Mormon presence. But not like Utah. David Lory Vanderbeek is running for governor of Nevada and he is Mormon, but I like him. Vegas is weird because it has a HUGE number of churches, of all different denominations, yet it is a major gambling town nicknamed "sin city." Mormons originally started Las Vegas, but they didn't get much of a foothold. Mormons employees were valued because they didn't drink.
It's weird that perhaps the most radical religious state is right next door to the most radical gambling state.
