I've been thinking about the old ward in Utah County where I raised my family. Good God, some weird stuff happened there! Here's some of the things I remember. If every ward is like this, I guess Mo-ism may possibly not be the best for everybody..

1. Bishop's wife goes nuts, sets house of fire, burns herself and kids severely.

2. Lady next door leaves church over nursery program lesson changes.

3. Guy becomes widower.. Then comes out of closet as a gay man.

4. Another guy divorces wife, comes out as gay.

5. A man gets brain damage from a car accident. Wife dumps him, runs away with guy across the street who also gets divorce.

6. Woman divorces husband, marries a female-to-male transsexual.

7. A guy, (high priest group leader) gets busted for having sex with his daughters.

This was in the most concentrated Mormon area I could possibly think of! They put on a good front, but this illustrates that it is just that.. a front.

I remember a street (very nice neighborhood) where one of the members had a group of neighbors over on a regular basis, they would meet and all go swimming NAKED.

The catch: You had to have a current temple recommend in order to swim.

This list is from several non Utah wards, as I moved a lot in my childhood***

Priesthood member refuses to make payments on house purchased from another priesthood holder. Bank takes house.

Priesthood holder has sex with underage female member and is exed.

Priesthood holder announces that voices in his station wagon give him advice.

Older female member says she saw demons in a priesthood man's eyes.

Disturbed Mormon boy sets fire to the drapes in his living room.

Bishop coaxes children into talking about masturbation.

Bishop asks underage girls if they have lesbian affairs.

Long haired boy confronted at knife point in church hallway by angry classmate.

Priesthood holder steals life savings from his own daughter.

Priesthood holder convinces members to invest in his shaky real estate deals. His business fails, and he flees the state with the remaining money

Priesthood holder gives extra thousand to the building fund while his children go hungry.

Righteous female member accuses inactive boy of being a drug dealer.

Priesthood holder claims Jesus assisted him in auto purchase decision.

***This is how I know Mormonism. This is how I have seen it in practice, despite the claims of its adherents. "A filthy, nasty affair."

And on a side note, none of the "religious" people in other churches were any better around here.

My childhood Utah county ward had #3, a variation of #5, a bishop's daughter who got pregnant, an entire extended family who lived in the same house and lived the law of consecration, a man (from that family) whose wife left him after she found out he was into kiddy porn, three teenage pyromaniacs, and a woman who went to jail for embezzlement. And that's just off the top of my head.

Oh the memories! I grew up in extreme morridor, one of my best friends dad was in the stake presidency so we snuck the keys to the stake center frequently and let ourselves in to play ball, hide and seek etc. One saturday afternoon, me and 3 others let ourselves in and were playing tag in the cultural hall in the dark, I was 13 or 14 and we heard someone come in the back door. We quickly jumped up on the stage and hid behind the extra curtains behind the main curtain. Lights pop on in the cultural hall and a man (1st counsellor in SP) came in with a 20's young woman... attractive. They were joking, flirting, etc. We all gave each other a look like what the heck!!! Then they started making out and quickly clothes came off. They did it right there in the center of the basket ball court. 4 young teenagers got a full lesson on sex ed that day! We were all shocked, for many reasons! We didn't have the guts to tell, we'd be caught sneaking the keys and get in trouble and never get to use them again.

These days, that sex act would have been captured on smart phone, posted to the internet, and gone viral!

I was cleaning the church once (when I was still a brainwashed bumbling believer) and noted some white dried substance on the carpet beneath the bishops chair in his office. I have never had respect for that man since then. Funny though, I still went on believing the church was true for another few years.

One of my older sister's friends became pregnant and was sent out of state to have the baby, put it up for adoption, and then returned as if nothing happened.

First counselor sleeps with bishop's wife causing divorce in both families and then the first counselor and bishop's wife marry and try to meld the families into one twisted mormon family with 13 kids. Causing untold issues and damage to all of the kids and spouses for many years to come. This situation was epic in the small town I grew up in.

Bishop's children out doing hard drugs (LSD, heroine, etc.) while he asks me about masturbation and cursing at virtually the same time.

Two obviously gay boys in my age group make hot sweet love to each other and are then sent to what I can only imagine was a soul-crushing pray-the-gay-away camp. One is now in denial and married with a kid while the other is happily out but can't let go of the mormon church.

One of the boy scouts tries to light the church on fire and my dad suspects me and my brother. The worst trouble we'd ever been in prior to that was not cleaning our room. Mom then begins to suspect us and treats us as if we're murdering rapists.

All of my sisters and cousins were molested by my TBM grandfather in this same town. And when I say all, I mean ALL. Probably 20 girls under the age of 12. Grandfather is never reported to police.

There's a few but there are many more. This was in a small town with only about 300 mormons and 2 wards.

If that grandfather's surname was King, we are likely related. I'd be the daughter of one of those girls.

Bishop of a University of Utah ward gets arrested for drunk driving. No one does anything.

The same guy shares naked hot tub session with underage girl. Much later, his own bishop arranges pay-off session with now-adult girl so she won't talk.

Man becomes Utah legislator.

Woman talks, anyway, and man is eventually hounded out of LDS-majority legislature by the press. Man is given standing ovation as he defiantly leaves.

If you have money and influence, Mormonism allows all.

Former representative Kevin Garn?

The woman's name was Cheryl Mather. She was killed in a murder-suicide in 2011.

Garn kills me because he is a wealthy man, which only adds fuel to my fire when I'm told "pay your tithing and the lord will bless you". Well, he apparently 'blesses' you when you hot tub with underage girls and drive drunk while serving as one of his 'anointed'. Ugh!

Never really had anything like that happening in my ward. Quite a lot of divorces to be fair (especially since the church is so anti-divorce), but other than that nothing.

I do know two women that were married to men, then came out as lesbians and divorced, but neither were mormon.

I love this kind of post. Here are a few

1. Friends father - BYU prof, and BYU bish sleeps with grad student/TA, girl gets pregnant, He divorces wife with cancer, leaves her with custody of 1 HS boy (my friend, one elementary student, and 2 older drug addict sons.) Marries the preg TA and continues teaching at BYU.

2. Very poor family in ward has 6 kids in 6 years. Always using church help and welfare. Kids malnourished, Our poor family even did secret christmas for them. Wife finds info for bank account she did not recognize as theirs, investigates, finds husband has been hoarding cash from his construction jobs for a decade in secret bank accounts. Wife gets lawyer involved, divorce, seizes bank account with over $250K in it, buys new house in American Fork.

3. An older couple up the street. RS presidency and HP leadership. He has always kept 2nd floor of the house locked up. in 15 years she has never gone to the second floor but he uses it for his "hobby". One day while he is at work police come with a search warrant for the house and break down the door. Second floor looks like a pawn shop warehouse with shelves containing statues, collectibles, gold coins, power tools, guns, etc. all categorized and labelled. Many items identified as stolen in burglaries across the county. Paperwork and keys found for storage units in other cities found to contain stolen larger items including several motorcycles and a boat.

4. Son of stake YM leader arrested after several businesses and schools in city robbed. Some using a chainsaw to rip hole in side of building or ramming a stolen car into the store. Officer pulled over a car for speeding and notices a gun in subjects lap in the back seat. after they are arrested at gunpoint the gun is found to be a starters pistol taken from school safe by chainsaw 3 nights before and the theft ring unravels. All arrested were priests in their respecive wards

5. Stake presidents councilor and church employee has teen daughter fall on icy steps outside their home when going to church. She is in obvious agony. Drags her into car, carries her into sac meeting and has people help her to SS/YW. She passes out in YW and his wife takes her to emergency room after church. He stays at church for meetings. Girl has a broken hip and complications from all the moving around afterwards. CPS investigates.

6. Mormon author (she also wrote for the local paper under a pseudonym)and hubby run pirated movie business out of their home (int he 80's) They get movies on VHS while still in the theater and rent them for $1 a day per tape. Each tape has 2 movies on them. For $5 they will make you a copy. Filmed by various "friends" who work for theaters across several states. We watched ET the day after it was released in the comfort of our own home. Local officer and member of the ward would get first run movies from them and charge admission for ward kids to come to his house and watch with his kids. Popcorn and refreshments were also available to purchase.

7. long term High council member and local police leadership. Wife always in primary calling as pres or music or teacher. Frequently misses due to illnesses including "spider bite" that keeps her bedridden for months. fast forward several years and he is convicted in 2 different states for forcible sex on a child under the age of 5. Has been abusing kids an wife and now grandkids for decades. Hope he rots in prison for the rest of his life.

8. Son of full time CES teacher goes on mission to Kentucky. After a year he is back due to "health issues" He is reassigned to SLC mission to complete his mission. Later marries girl in ward, graduates for BYU, "example for us all". Arrested several years later for throwing his wife down a set of stairs and severtly injuring her. Kids also show signs of severe abuse. Saw his obit last year and they did not even mention his 3 kids. His wife was oldest daughter of #7 so I really feel for the kids.

9. Different ward - Girl gets married in the temple at 18 to a newly returned missionary. They both live with her newly divorced mother. She gets pregnant and the marriage goes south. They divorce and he shortly gets remarried __TO HER MOTHER__ in the temple. Mother then gets pregnant and gives birth to her grandsons aunt/half sister. His father becomes his step grandfather and his grandmother also becomes his stepmother. They all still live in the same house.

Wow, How did I believe in the church considering all my role models growing up? 1-8 happened in a 3 block radius of the house I grew up in.

Forgot an important detail on #8. We found out later he was sent home from his mission for beating his companion to a pulp and hospitalizing him. The "reassignment" to SLC was the family hiding him while he was going through in-patient mental health treatment for several issues.

a few youth who come to church hung over and reeking of booze from the night before.

This entire thread needs to be added as an addendum to M. Scott Peck's book "People of the Lie"--evil people hiding behind religion. But then look at the founder--the entire foundation is a lie!

Not in Utah....
Scoutmaster raped all 4 of his daughters. He told his marriage counselor sil all about it. Nobody every called police. He gets divorce and marries a woman in the ward with 4 little girls.

First counselors son gets caught using his sister as a sex slave. She ends up in the mental institution for cutting.

Realestate guy rips off the bishop.Bishop excommunicates him. Real estate guy has an affair with bishops wife.

Very wealthy motivational speaker leaves his wive and 10 kids for a 16 year old in the ward.

The top darling of the ward leaves his wife for another man. He gets custody of 3 boys. She kills herself with an overdose. Years before that he was on a date with the bishops daughter. He fell asleep at the wheel. He's not hurt, she's in hospital for months, almost died. She didn't sue his ins. company because it wasn't a nice thing to do. 40 years later she's suffering every minute of her life. She's in a wheelchair. He's the owner of a hair salon.

One family has 8 kids. They live off the grid. Word in the ward is DON'T babysit for them. They don't have flush toilets and reuse rags for toilet paper.

A guy and his wife with 6 kids. They both work and make a LOT of money. They live in a run down shack with holes in the floor. The kids are always dirty and smelly. Kids grow up and find out parents stashed millions. They bulldoze the parents house while they're vacationing in Hawaii.

Man and his wife have 4 little kids. They're driving down the road one day and he hits and kills a little boy. He makes his wife get in the drivers seat and take the blame. Same guy attempted to molest his sisters

There's much much more.....

Ward I grew up in. Not in Utah or any highly mormon area:

The bishop's never married gay son was the ward pianist.

A son of one of the counselors in the bishopric grew pot in his bedroom.

The youngest son of one of the holier than thou families returns from his mission and announces that he's gay.

A married father of two girls comes out that he's gay and divorces his wife. He was a barber.

Rampant sex between the ym/yw...but hey, they were dating members!

The stake allowed single adults to attend youth dances...so the single adult men (some divorcees) could find wives.

A family in the stake had their pregnant teenage niece from Utah living with them through the pregnancy. She would attend the youth dances.

A family with at least 6 kids lived out in the country on a very wooded and secluded property. I always felt creepy about the dad. Come to find out he had been molesting his daughters and teaching his sons how to molest their sisters. One of the daughters finally told the mom and the family went to the bishop about it. The church leaders in the ward and stake counseled the family to get a divorce and for the dad to move to another ward but still in the same stake. Law enforcement was never contacted. A couple of years later the dad marries a single mom with children from his new ward.

Married CES area leader came out as gay after his retirement. The church had him go through gay aversion therapy and he is still married. Funny thing is all the youth thought he was gay.

My neighbor is arrested for molesting the neighborhood children.

His Mormon buddies all tell the judge how great of a guy he is.

He goes to prison anyway.

One of the nice things about living in non-Mormon Colorado.
