The person who posted this isn't even LDS. I have nothing against modesty or virtue, but having a bunch of young guys dancing around, self-righteously singing about the value of covering up just comes off as disingenuous to me. Plus, it's just really a cheesy video.

A culture with very little demonstrated creative ability to connect with others outside of their community.

Reduced to a parody of a pop song to enforce their modesty doctrines and teachings on their adolescents. Mormonism, where pretending to be cool is cool. Pull up a backward facing chair and let's talk candidly about Jesus Smith and how he feels modest is hottest. We can chill.

LOL!!!

What kills me about this dorky video is that I bet none of these guys singing about modesty, in theory at least, don't actually like the more modest girls. These guys are at an age at which they are no doubt horny as hell and they aren't allowed to relieve themselves in the way nature intended, hence the hyperactive dancing and basketball games. Am I really supposed to believe they believe what they're singing?

Yecch!

This is, I think, the most fitting tscc slogan I've seen yet.

A non-mo online friend of mine had posted it on facebook. I told her they were mormon and their leaders put the burden on the women to dress a certain way and make it her fault if the guy thinks impure thoughts. I think she sort of got that part of it, but she didn't seem to think the video was saying that. I think it was. There was a line in there about how the girls needed to help them, or something like that. I'm not quite awake yet. I might not be making any sense. :-)

The line "If only you saw what I can see you'd understand why I need your modesty." That certainly seems to say, at least to me, the blame is put on the girl and because of his thoughts he needs her modesty.

Reminds me of a man in one of our Sunday School classes was complaining that every day riding the tube to work he would see young women in mini skirts sitting across from him and how improper that was, blah, blah, blah. When he was done with his rant I spoke up and said, "Then don't look!" You could have heard a pin drop. Then I added, They probably aren't Mormon. They don't believe what you do." The teacher quickly moved on.

I detest the idea that women are taught they are responsible for what men think.

I like the token black singer.

A TBM friend, in a conversation the other day, told me that "if a woman gets raped, it's because the way she dresses and acts, because she's asking for it". Yeah...blame the victim in the Morg.

Those guys are all clean cut and this was obviously made to impress young girls that to catch a cute, temple worthy husband, they have to dress modestly. But Mormon guys as a whole are no different than any other guys, deep down. They're just expected to look the part. It's almost like false advertising.

And yeah, I noticed the token black guy, too.

There was even one with long hair and jeans...I think they had to dig a little deeper to find the black guy...his goatee was grey! I bet every last one of them is using the video to try and get laid.....well, except the one or two that are statistically in the closet.

I agree. Nobody likes sex more than a member of an anti-sex league.

The black singer is Alex Boye.

Ya, as much as I object to the organization behind this stuff.

Judging the video on its own merits I had a hard time finding anything objectionable except for the crap song and poor sound quality.

Telling girls they don't have to show skin to get attention isn't all bad. I understand it's counter productive to demonize girls for wearing short skirts and cocktail dresses, but the video was more positive than all that.

I think my approach with my girls when they reach puberty will be to watch the "Stupid spoiled whore" episode of South Park with them and basically say "you see? it's probably not smart to go full Miley Cyrus, nobody wants to see that"

Okay, so my wife disagrees with me. She says that the line where it says "if only you could see, bladah bladah I need your modesty" Is an attempt to place all the responsibility on the young women.
If that was what was meant by that line, then I hate the video a lot. However, I still think it's just bad song writing and they simply replaced Desperately with Modesty.

Once upon a time I was a young woman. I was thin, and pretty.

I lived the life and knew exactly what guys liked. It wasn't rocket science. Wearing frumpy clothes that looked like the RS ladies donation bag wasn't where it was at.

If that's what guys were attracted to they'd be all over those old ladies.

Some middle aged guy talked these young guys into singing this stupid song. The guys don't mean a word of it.

I will say that there is a good middle ground. Women can wear what they like. It's not necessary to have it ALL out there to get a guys attention. I think good taste, common sense, and style go a long way.

Now let's turn this little song and dance around. What if the young women were doing a little song and dance about the boys. What would the message be? Why do these guys think that it's ok to give the girls permission to be modest? THAT is what bothered me about this dance. Really! Who do they think they are??? Why would they think I would care about they thought about MY clothing? They seem to be sooooo proud to tell the girls how they should be dressing. They can take a leap off a cliff.

I don't object to being careful about the clothes we wear, but is this video pointing out that it's the women who have to watch what their wearing?

I made up my own lyrics to the tune:

It’s hot outside
But I don’t care,
I don’t want to see above your knees ba-a-are.

Your pits can show
That’s okay,
But your shoulders never ought to be on display.
We don’t know why they are taboo turn-ons.
Somehow your elbows aren’t though - oh,

Those hiked up garment lines can be a big turn on
The fabric at your neck doesn’t tempt me too much
I’ve got no self control You’ve gotta help me please
You’ve gotta try-y-y
make garments beautiful.

burkas are so seventeenth century
Everyone knows men have no self control ability
I don’t care if their yellow frayed or grey
Just wear them anyway
Aren’t garments beautiful.

now listen women
just cover up,
you know we men can’t resist for too loo-o-ong.

Make it easy
do as Joe said
cover up even when your in be- e - ed

Everyone else can see we’re crazy
Everyone else but us.

------
as I review the lyrics it occurrs to me that maybe
Jo invented the garment to keep his weasely, smarmy lack of self-control at a slow gallop.....as penance for his lust perhaps. lol.

I just read this article today:

http://theotherjournal.com/2014/03/03/naked-and-ashamed-women-and-evangelical-purity-culture/

It was so painful to read because I lived that culture to the letter. In the wake of that, this video was disgusting to watch and freaked me right the eff out.

How many of these young men masturbate to porn the night before they bless the sacrament? I would guess more than one. But it's all about appearances in the church...

"Girls with integrity are hard to find".

So, less-than-modest clothing equals a lack of integrity?

... nothing, really NOTHING, made me go off a guy faster than someone thinking he had the right to tell me how to dress!

Yeah, I caught that too. It just comes off as very condescending and rude. Like, I can't control myself, so you need to dress "appropriately". And I probably won't want to date you anyway, but it's still your responsibility to protect me from my weak lusty instincts.

Blecch!

I have seen quite a few "flash mob" videos done by LDS people, some with bishopric members in ward house, and have found some of them very cute and amusing. This one is profoundly offensive--more of the Tad Callister bullcrap.

The hypocrisy is absolutely nauseating.

So . . .

Girls, trust us, you don't want [non-Mormon] guys that only judge you by your looks, any way. No, you want US, the [Mormon] ones who PREFER you to cover up, and that's just how you'll get us - by covering up. 'Cause we're gonna judge that you "respect yourself" if you cover up, since that's how we judge you - by your looks. But, Wait - we DON'T judge you by your looks . . . oh. Uh-oh.

Well, never mind, you still want US, any way, 'cause we look good with these plastic, hip-gyrating "moves" . . . which would be all immodest if you did them, of course. Trust us.

Eww.
