Pearl of Great Price scripture reference needed on blacks/canaanites

Isn't there a verse in the pearl of great price about blacks / seed of cain / canaanites being cursed as servants (servants of servants - maybe)?

quote from the lds.org essay on race & the priesthood:

"Black servitude was sometimes viewed as a second curse placed upon Noah's grandson Canaan as aresult of Ham's indiscretion toward his father"

The essay makes it sound like it wasn't taught in the church, but I thought it was in the scriptures.

Hopefully this gives you what you were looking for...(connect these two sources together (Book of Moses and Book of Abraham) and you should see the full picture.


Book of Moses (Pearl of Great Price)

". . . there was a blackness came upon all the children of Canaan, that they were despised among all people . . . (Moses 7:8)."

"And . . . they were a mixture of all the seed of Adam save it was the seed of Cain, for the seed of Cain were black, and had not place among them (Moses 7:22)."




Book of Abraham (Pearl of Great Price)

". . . from Ham, sprang that race which preserved the curse in the land (Abraham 1:24)."

"Now the first government of Egypt was established by Pharaoh, the eldest son of Egyptus, the daughter of Ham, . . . Noah, his father, who blessed him with the blessings of the earth, . . . but cursed him as pertaining to the Priesthood.

"Now, Pharaoh being of the lineage by which he could not have the right of Priesthood, . . . (Abraham 1:26-27)."

The scripture I think you're referring to is found in the Bible:

"And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren." (Genesis 9:25)


No mention of black skin there, though.

They just mention "a mark" in the book of Genesis. definitely no mention of black skin
