In the sacrament meeting talk he gave last September, Mormon businessman John H. Zenger quoted a BYU professor as saying:

“… in the Mormon Church the official doctrine is that the Prophet is fallible. But no one seems to want to believe that.”

Of course Mormons believe the prophet is infallible! That’s what they are taught from day one. I heard it over and over: “The brethren will never lead you astray.”

How can one say the brethren are fallible if they routinely tell us they receive inspiration and revelation from God? Yet, in his speech Zenger said:

“I contend that we need to believe that our leaders are fallible in order to keep our sanity and integrity….”

Thus:

-- Mormons believe their leaders are infallible (BYU prof), which is logical because Mormons are taught that their leaders ARE infallible (“The brethren will never lead you astray”).

_ Yet Zenger is saying that “sanity” and “integrity” are compromised when Mormons see their leadership as infallible.

So, Mr. Zenger, since church leaders have pretty much insisted for nearly two hundred years that they are essentially infallible, how many members have lost their sanity and/or their integrity?

'We DON't Thank Thee, Oh Gawd, For A Profit'

'Don't Follow The Profit'

With this latest Pulpit Profession, the hymn books will need some 'correcting'...

The Mormon church has never--as far as I am aware--made any kind of official list of doctrine or catechism that one can consult to make that determination for any given point. I like to defer to the idea of "official teachings of the Mormon church," instead. Of course, these "official teachings" change like the wind.

However, here's a nice summary of CURRENTLY taught concepts relevant in the discussion of prophetic infallibility in the Mormon church (from the OFFICIAL "Doctrine and Covenants and Church History Seminary Teacher Manual" [2013]):

"'"... [A]lways keep your eye on the President of the Church, and if he ever tells you to do anything, and it is wrong, and you do it, the Lord will bless you for it." ... "But you don’t need to worry. The Lord will never let his mouthpiece lead the people astray"'...."

https://www.lds.org/manual/doctrine-and-covenants-and-church-history-seminary-teacher-manual-2014/section-7/lesson-153-official-declaration-1-and-the-continued-development-of-temple-work?lang=eng

So, basically "... always follow the prophet ... and if he's wrong, you'll be rewarded for your obedience ... but don't worry, because he's never wrong."

And that's the scariest thing about this particular cult: no matter what your conscience tells you, not matter what the law of the land dictates, Mormons believe that God will reward them if they do what the prophet says, and punish them if they don't.

"Of course Mormons believe the prophet is infallible!"

Indeed they do, but seldom will a mormon use the "I-word" because that would suggest parallels with the Whore of Babylon.

Nope, mormon popes are "inerrant"; catholic popes are infallible.
