I was thinking earlier today about Bishops. It is just another thing that I don’t understand why people put up with. Why do people go and tell their deepest feelings and secrets to a man who is completely unqualified to give them direction and guidance? They are just your average joe and have no education in therapy or counseling of any sort. Why would you take advice from them? I never once went to my bishop when I was a Mormon.

Brainwashing!

That's why they put up with it plain and simple. Bishops have the gift of discernment and they are judges in Israel so they don't need professional training.

Pretty sad. Even in my days of trying to be TBM I knew better than to tell my bishop things that weren't his business!

Bishops are conduits for the Lord's knowledge and will. They don't need to know squat. God will feed the answers through them.

Ah-ha-ha. I made myself laugh.

Bisops are also conduits for ward/stake/ and small town gossip.

I had a bishop for many years who WAS the ward/stake/ and small town gossip. He was later excommunicated.

There's a quantum leap from all other local callings to bishop.
Bishops are approved by Salt Lake, and are considered elite.
Only bishops are supposed to hear sensitive confessions in a ward.
The ones I worked with fully believed they had the "spirit of discernment", which is that they interpret their own hunches as promptings from the holy ghost. In some cases this leads to gross injustices and injuries.
