The most I ever had was a 30-day supply. I just couldn't fathom saving any more than that because I try to eat fresh, seasonal food. And even as a TBM, I thought that if anything apocalyptic happened, I wanted to die up-front. I don't want to stay alive for a year!
We never had a year supply of food; I know very few TBMs that did. It's pretty crazy that they expected a year supply of food for every person in the family - you'd need to rent a warehouse just to store it all. Who eats that much wheat and honey anyway? A TBM friend argued with me that food storage has come a long way and is much better, lots of freeze dried and dehydrated food now. I said yeah, if you've got the money to pay for it. He admitted that they had just spent around $1500 on dehydrated food (and that's not nearly a years supply for his family). Not too many people have money to throw around like that.
I do think it's common sense to have some food on hand, but a year is crazy.
