I like the bumper sticker: "Religion should stay out of politics or be taxed."

As we have seen during the recent "lame duck" session in December, Congress does not have the political will to make wholesale changes in the tax code.

In additon, if Congress were to seriously propose taxing churches, don't you think that the Catholics and the Southern Baptists would have "holy" fits?

On the other hand, the only viable way that I see anything happening in this arena is if the various states and counties were to stop giving property tax exemptions to churches and temples....imagine the possible property tax assessment on the Washington DC temple. And I do believe that the largest category of assets owned directly by the Morgs are in land and buildings.

You know, I'd settle for full disclosure of finances like in the UK.

If a non-profit engages in politics, they can lose their IRS non-profit status. It's a big no no. But I think TSSC isn't a true non-profit, they've snuck in somehow under the wire.

That is why the church put so much pressure on members to donate the money. If they had made the donation directly they would have been in more jeopardy of loosing tax exempt status. Has there ever been a large church that has lost it's tax exempt status? Given the current political climate a church could probably get away with quite a lot of political contributions.

I don't know, but the IRS has a list of orgs that have lost their status if anyone cares to research it.
