Have an ancestor that was misfortunate enough to settle Bluff, Utah. (The state of Utah has a pretty good website on how miserable and doomed it was to be part of that Hole In the Rock group.)

So we toured the re-created pioneer cabins and it was interesting and well done. The cabins are built privately by pioneer families.

Evidently the preservation group is trying to get the state to take over and as part of that the docents desperately try to get you to give your name and address as proof of the number of visitors.

The visitors there that day were savvy enough to refuse to give out information that could be used for missionary work. I felt sorry for the docents, but not sorry enough to give out my info.

I often wonder what they really thought of Brigham and why they were chosen to settle a wasteland...

I spent a summer in Bluff, but it was working with the Navajo as part of a project with the Episcopal Church--no missionary work, and great fry bread!

I've heard from my nonmormon relatives that the men who came out of Bluff to work in nearby towns (so to speak) were skeletal and dressed in rags. Gave them a very bad view of Mormons.
