I promised I'd share some more unusual job hunting tips from my class on what to do when you've done everything and are still unemployed. I'm assuming you have checked out your resume and references with friends to make sure nothing's wrong with them, and your hygiene and clothing are A-OK.

* Write on your mirror "Someone is hiring today"

* Read the business newspapers for your city. Work up a route to visit each and every company who is undergoing a management change, a restructuring and especially take note of who has hired a person who would be your boss. They usually do not want to work over someone who is disgruntled that they were passed over for promotion. Also, sometimes that person quits in disgust. So there's a job opening that will not be advertised--at least right away, BUT if someone attractive shows up, well...

* Sign up for college. This is especially important if you are long-term unemployed. You will be on record immediately as a student (perhaps "pending" your financing), however, this gives you the appearance of someone who chose to improve their skills, not just collect unemployment insurance. Of course you will go through and line up courses so you can answer questions about what you (plan to) or are taking. Make sure they move you towards a credential or give you software skills so you can say you are keeping up with technology by taking classes.

* Volunteer to do research (for a class) that puts you physically in the building where you feel you are qualified to work. Then network the hell out of everyone you meet by asking them questions, saying you are interested in the field and particularly interested in the company culture because of their good reputation (or whatever).

Adapt these ideas for your field. For example, if you are an architect, you can volunteer to use your CAD skills for helping with updating programs. Data entry is always needed almost everywhere.
