We are headed down to a family reunion in Highland next week. So I get a call this afternoon from my Sister, who is married to a TBM (like, really TBM) is 44 years old has 2 kids.

She was calling to ask me a favor. Since my wife and I left the church last year and no longer wear crazy underwear my wife has been wearing tank tops. Here is what she asked:

"My husband asked that I call you regarding the clothes your wife wears. They are sometimes too revealing and cause him to have impure thoughts. Can you please tell her not to wear clothes that won't work with garments?"

Now, I was BIC and have heard of this kind of thing before. But now on the outside looking in it sounds so CRAZY. Why is it my wife's job to keep him from having impure thoughts? Does that mean he gets a boner when he sees her shoulders, but if he doesn't see shoulders he's OK? Why is my sister not pissed at her husband instead of blaming my wife? Seriously, he has "impure" thoughts about my wife and she is upset with my wife and not her husband. What the hell?

Just tell your sister, "I'm sorry your husband is unable to control his sexual thoughts. But that is not my wife's problem and I refuse to ask her to play along with the rules that you think will keep your husband morally clean".

Seriously, does your sister ask all of his coworkers, neighbors, etc. to abide by her Mormon underwear dress code?

I wonder if this is all jealousy on the sister's part--nothing to do with her husband. I mean, what married man is stupid enough to admit it to his wife if he *does* find his SIL hot?

I was wondering the same thing. Can you imagine how that conversation went? How do you even start?

Tell her that you don't tell your wife what to wear, and that it is ridiculous for her to presume to do so. Suggest that she should be more concerned about her husband sexually harassing women than your wife's fashion choices.

And don't ever leave her alone with either of them. Who knows what they'll say. If they say anything you should LOUDLY tell them to stop making inappropriate remarks about your wife's body.

I told her that if I told my wife that she would be totally weirded out by my BIL. Nothing screams porn addiction to me more than something like this.

My wife does have some seriously hot shoulders, but if it's hot outside there is no way she is going to cover them up.

There is no way I even tell my wife about this. That would create more family issues than we already have.

I was reading on the "new garment rule" thread that, according to the Temple Recommend book, garments "will serve as a protection against temptation". Is your BIL not wearing his garments? Perhaps he needs new ones with ETP (enhanced temptation protection).

Tell your sister to go fuck herself, or her husband if he is so hard up that he is confessing to having "impure" thoughts about his sister-in-law. Maybe ask her why big priesthood man didn't man up and come tell your wife himself that she needs to cover up because she is responsible for the purity of his thoughts. Is he too afraid to come and try to boss around and shame your wife himself? Then, you and your wife go to the family thing wearing whatever in the hell you want unashamedly. Then, never speak to these people again unless and until they would like to join us in the real world, where normal people at least keep their mother-fucking mouth shut when they feel like telling someone else what to wear to keep their husband pure.

Actually, you should do and say to your sister exactly what you would like to, and I recommend being frank with her. I get a little passionate about this issue. I apologize for harsh words concerning your sister. I am sure she is lovely.

I could be wrong, but I highly doubt this is about her husband at all. If her husband ACTUALLY can't keep himself under control at the sight of bare shoulders, I wouldn't think your wife would want to be around him at all, even fully covered. A guy like that would creep me out.

If you really wanted to be helpful, maybe you could have your wife get a burka for the occasion.

I had a random thought today walking into work: WHY THE HECK ARE SHOULDERS SO TEMPTING?!?

I mean, *really*?!

It was explained to me a long loooooong time ago that the shoulders are the butt cheeks of the arms and you wouldn't wear your butt cheeks uncovered in public, now would you?
This was also supposed to relieve women of the onerous duty of shaving the pits, but that was specifically my mom's reasoning, the butt cheeks business came from church.
The thing is then if shoulders are butt cheeks, then elbows are knees, and shirts ought to go just past the joint! But noooo, mormons have cap sleeves, the daisy dukes of the arms, and most of them probably shave their pits like I do whether wearing long sleeves or tanks.

I wouldn't be surprised if part of it is your sister being jealous of your wife being free to dress as she pleases. I know I would be.

Also, what Mormons call "impure thoughts" I would call "completely normal thoughts." The difference is they have been trained to fear them, so instead of it just being a passing thought that lasts a few seconds it becomes something they are fixated on for minutes as they struggle to push it away.

I think it comes from the fact that she lives in provo. There's probably not a bare shoulder in the entire valley. She feels like people coming into the valley need to conform to mormon standards. And somehow in mormondum it's not weird to blame your impure thoughts on someone else. Usually a women.

But seriously, tank tops are normal summer wear. Even in the Morridor, I see plenty of women out and about in tank tops, every day. If BIL can't handle seeing a woman in a tank top, your sister has bigger problems than what your wife is wearing.
