I honestly don't know if this is common. I never lived in an area with a temple and drove by a few. In Nauvoo the meeting house was close but not on temple grounds. I only say this because of the Indiana temple being built

Temples and ward houses are often on the same parcel of land, especially if it is a McTemple.

The original and now new and improved Ogden Temple was built next to the tabernacle, not quite the same as being by a meeting house but close. I understand they discussed building it in a more prominent place up on a hill but they already owned the land by the tabernacle.

What a great way to get converts I'm sure

The new one in Gilbert has what I assume is a stake (really huge) on the other side of the parking lot.

It's usually the other way around--a temple built on a chapel lot.

The Memphis McTemple was built after the stake center. It just used up a corner of the parking lot. So they share the parking lot although there are about 5 reserved spots right in front of the temple. Guess that's to make the temple president feel important to be presiding over a building that is rarely used.

The Westwood chapel is on the same parcel of land as the L.A. temple. Not sure if it's technically located on the "temple grounds" though. There may be a fence between the two; never tried to get from one to the other.

The Oakland Temple has always had a stake house on its property.

The Preston UK temple also has a stake centre and the MTC on the same plot

It reduces the cost of purchasing two parcels of land and gives the temple the appearance of being busy.

Let's not forget the interiors of the adjacent stake centers. They will be loaded with "extras" and a bijillion pictures of Cheezus Christ Superstar. Gotta project the image that Mormons actually know who he was and that he might be slightly (but not much) more important to them than the pedophile, Joseph's Myth.

The Anchorage, Alaska temple was built in the parking lot of what used to be the stake center. It is a McTemple.

Funny story: my nomo wife's friend from high school was forced to go to church. She got in a yelling match with her mother and ultimately told her that she hoped the church burnt down. It burned to a crisp that night. It was rebuilt, however, and due to the building being grandfathered in structure-wise, they had to utilize what was left of the frame to rebuild or they'd have to completely redesign the parking lot and grounds.

This doesn't sound like something out of the ordinary to me. The temple where I live is right across the parking lot from a stake centre. I had assumed that this was the norm.

The Twin Falls, Idaho temple also has a stake center. I've never really bothered going to grounds since you can't go inside. If it was like the Oakland temple with it's view of the bay area..I'd go just enjoy the view of the snake river canyon. But alas it's not.

I think that the temples in NYC and Hong Kong both have meeting houses below them in the same building, but I'm not sure. I know of at least one tiny temple that was built on existing grounds next to a ward house.

The Morg used an old stake center in NYC to build the Manhattan Temple. There are offices and a distribution on the second floor, a meetinghouse on the third floor, and the temple occupies floors 4, 5, & 6, as well as part of the first floor.

Seattle also has a stake center next to the temple. The temple came first.

The Guatemala City temple is on the same parcel of land with a stake center. They share a parking lot. I don't know which was built first, though.

How many freaking temples are there? When I joined there were only eight. I left not too long after the Dallas was dedicated. I remember hearing one time that there could one day be a temple in every stake center. You you could have it be pretty small really.

Bismarck, ND Mc-temple seems squished in behind the Church house. Kind of behind it in the church's parking lot. Really looks out of place and bizarre.

The Freiberg Germany temple has a chapel on the same grounds. They were built at the same time in the 80s. The East German government let the church build them because they were not like the other churches and speaking out against the government. This collaboration worked against us later when the East Germans finally kicked out the socialists.

The Mt. Timpanogos (spelling?) temple in the heart of Utah County also shares a lot with a stake center. Sharing the parking lot makes sense to me, as there's not much overlap between activities at the church (Sunday and weekday nights) and temple (Saturday, I guess?). Also saves on up-front costs as well as paying for plowing and other upkeep.

Newport Beach CA had a stake center first. Eventually a temple was built on vacant land (that TSCC bought with the original parcel, either for parking expansion or for a temple) east of the parking lot.

There's a big Stake Centre at the other end of the parking lot next to the Toronto Temple.

In Idaho Falls there was a LDS Hospital and the temple together then in the 80's the hospital was torn down and replaced with a stake center.

The Assembly Hall on Temple Square was a Stake Center so even the flagship Temple at one time shared ground with a Stake Center
