I don't know about missionaries, but frybread is wonderful!

(Of course, it has been a VERY long time since I've eaten any...)

I love sopaipillas even more!!

(And it has been a VERY long time since I've eaten any sopaipillas, either.)

I think I need to either go to a pow-wow...or get back to northern New Mexico. I wish I could magically transport myself to Chimayo for dinner tonight. :)

P.S. I wonder if the Santo Nino is out and about tonight. ;)

Frybread in Bluff, Utah. Sopaipillas in Chama, NM. Good memories!

The frybread phenomenon is a cultural happy accident that isn't really happy.

Lamanites who were cast into reservations were given bags of unfamiliar white flour to survive on.

A metabolically challenging food substance for Europeans alone, it gave the gift of obesity to Native Americans.

So who can eat just one? Not I.

I love frybread with strawberries and powdered sugar.

But yeah. I have a friend whose screen name is ComodBod. :-(

A Native American in my ward (she was in the placement program) made Navajo Tacos for us for one of our young womens activities. The tortillas were made from scratch and they were delicious.

to Portland. They have Fry bread for sale near the new casino, and I occasionally pick some up. It's pretty damn good.

We used to go there many summers as a kid. I always loved it!

Used to skip school with friends and go to Kah-nee-Tah for the day. It's a bit difficult to explain a sunburn when you get home on a rainy day in Portland.

I thought it was hilarious when she suggested Chicken Fricassee. She called the sauce a "delicassy"....and...suggested you use grape juice instead of wine in it. Doh!

I thought it was ridiculous to suggest prime rib. For mishies? When did you know a mormon family that ate that for themselves much less two extra hungry guys? 10% a month given to a bazillion dollar real estate empire cuts into the food budget.

Prime rib. Indeed.

How many Mormons call "fry bread" scones?

I'll just say this, I was on the reservation for part of my mission and I loved both...I regret that I even went of course, but that was a nice discovery.

the only reason people like navajo tacos and fry bread is because they haven't had the green chili and potato stew at the sky city casino on interstate 40 in new mexico.
I would kill for that recipe !

Navajo tacos and frybread are delicious. Why wouldn't missionaries (or anyone) love them? Although someone might skip them for diet reasons because frybread can't be that healthy.

But when your life depends on infrequent deliveries of often rancid commodities, you work with what you got. Flour and oil. Sometimes running water.

Not all rezs have electricity, especially in the Southwest. Sad times for the people.

Yup. Hopefully that will change when the pipeline is finished.

Obesity around here is so common, it's almost jarring to see anyone skinny.

But on the Rez, you make due with what you have. I agree with the poster that the diet of flour and oil has contributed to the many health problems for the Natives.

I make frybread once in while, but it feels like I ate a boulder 30 minutes after eating. There was a lady making some at the farmer's market this morning. It smelled so wonderful, but I chose to go with coffee instead.

The stuff is yummy. My sister is married to a Navajo and I like going to their get-togethers, not only because they are cool folks, but they always have fry bread!
