The most I ever had was a 30-day supply. I just couldn't fathom saving any more than that because I try to eat fresh, seasonal food. And even as a TBM, I thought that if anything apocalyptic happened, I wanted to die up-front. I don't want to stay alive for a year!

Me own mom and pops never gave the travails of too much time on the shelf a second thought.

If an opened food product had gone bad, we just fed the chickens and pigs with it and the befouled foodstuff was violoia......fortuitously farm fresh.

We never had a year supply of food; I know very few TBMs that did. It's pretty crazy that they expected a year supply of food for every person in the family - you'd need to rent a warehouse just to store it all. Who eats that much wheat and honey anyway? A TBM friend argued with me that food storage has come a long way and is much better, lots of freeze dried and dehydrated food now. I said yeah, if you've got the money to pay for it. He admitted that they had just spent around $1500 on dehydrated food (and that's not nearly a years supply for his family). Not too many people have money to throw around like that.

I do think it's common sense to have some food on hand, but a year is crazy.

I see nothing wrong with keeping the food you eat handy but freeze dried is a waste of cash.

If you make $20,000 per year and are a faithful Mormon, you spend anually:

2,000 tithe
1,500 food storage
510 gas to drive to all the mandatory meetings
240 fast offering (twenty dollars per)
120 temple expenses incl. garments (blind estimate)
40 misc. magazines, etc

=4,500--you can own and operate a decent used car for that money. And you need that car a lot more than you need lessons in obedience.
