Ballard was seeing a mission-appointed counselor for anxiety. “My counselor said, ‘Elder Ballard, you can choose to be yourself and do what you believe in, or you can live a hollow life.’ I don’t think he realized what he was saying. A week later, I called my mission president and told him I was going home.”

I found it interesting that they quoted a figure of 2% of all missionaries that eventually apostatize. In my experience, as well as the experiences of many that post here, the actual number of return missionaries that have apostatized is far higher than 2%.

That MAY be somewhat accurate. They say that 40% become inactive, but only 2% get ex'd or resign. I think a lot of them can't officially leave because of family pressures.
