Today on the Football Friday show, Hans Olsen made the point that BYU has had trouble recruiting quality athletes because of too high academic standards, the honor code and athletes not being able to follow it, and the fact that in state star athletes are allured to playing for Utah to compete in the Pac-12. He then went on to say that BYU football will never be a powerhouse like it used to be, and that it will continue to be a mediocre football program that will probably get worse and worse every year. Couple that with the downfall of TSCC, Rise and shout the Cougars are out!

LaVell Edwards even agreed with him.

This Hans Olsen makes an accurate call. The morons would have to loosen up to make BYU football competitive again. All they know how to do is to keep tightening up. BYU would have to become a university sponsored by the church but not CONTROLLED by the church to ever turn their football program around. These are people that have no idea how to make things light and fun. Enjoying the downfall of the "Evil Empire".

How they could have ever have recruited a black athlete is beyond my comprehension.

They promised him that his skin would be white and delightsome if he joined. I think the NCAA should fine them for that. I swear you can't promise a black person that their skin will turn white if they join your program. If they did than BYU would get all the black star athletes. That is illegal and unfair recruiting under NCAA guidelines.

BYU football would be better if their players gave more than 10%

former players are throwing fuel into the dumpster fire. But what are they playing for anyway? It took just one loss to get knocked out of consideration for a major bowl so they're stuck with the Miami Beach Bowl just a few days before Joe Smith's Birthday, er, uh, Christmas. The decision to leave the MWC and go independent is a complete failure, as of tonight they will be 0-3 vs MWC teams. That took some real prophecy by LDS, Inc.

They don't have the academic qualities to join the Pac 12, so they thought they could be the Notre Dame of the West. ND is consistently overrated, but they have one selling point that BYU doesn't - they're f***ing Notre Dame.

Notre Dame has actual national-scale football history, while BYU had just the core years of LaVell Edwards, including one weak National Championship, almost nothing before him, and gradual decline afterward, with just a few big wins gained here-and-there to keep the faith of faithful that NEXT year they will return to glory.

BYU football, like the brethren, still think it is 1984

The other years went down the memory hole.

Intentional double application of 1984?

Yes, the Jim McMahon glory says were fun. But if they want that again, they gotta give players the same "get out of jail free" card they gave McMahon. The whole church is way too Nazi now to ever do that.

And even though the old WAC was weak, they had rivalries, a conference they dominated and, well, LaVell. They are now just an intramural team. Who cares about them besides mormons?
