"I really like how outspoken and normal Elder Ballard seemed. You know how after the broadcast he just said "I'm too tired to shake all your hands"? He was like that all the time. No pomp or snobbishness, he was just there to get something done and wanted to see the missionaries whilst he was here. He simply told us to talk to more people, and then we'll be able to baptise more people."

M. Russell Ballard
October 8, 1928 (age 87)

So retire! Oh, yeah, you can't. But you can dole out 1950s era dating advice (remember telling young women to wear lipstick and young men to open their eyes and see the lipstick?) to these young people you are too tired to even shake their hands.

What would Jesus do?

"No pomp or snobbishness..."

Did this minion of Ballard expect this from The Lord's apostles?

Often LDS people are making a tacit reference to the Roman Catholic pope when they allude to a perceived lack of pomposity in relation to an LDS leader. This doesn't apply as much as some Mormons might think, as the average GA probably lives higher on the hog than does the average pope. With regard to the current pope, Pope Francis, he's probably far less arrogant or pompous and far more approachable than even the humblest LDS apostle on the planet.

His grandmother probably thought women who wore makeup were hussies. Dolly Parton says she got her look from the town whore.

Now Ballard is telling young women to go out like painted ladies. What once was the sign of loose morals is now the symbol of traditional womanhood.

"Dolly Parton says she got her look from the town whore."

"The" town whore? Like there was only one in Sevierville, TN? :-)

This is exactly everything that is wrong with the LDS leadership model. And they're reaping the rewards of that.

It is obvious that they need massive changes, but their leadership is stuck in the 1950s, when they came of age.

Even when this leadership dies off, they will move onto being stuck in the 1970s, but by then it will be the 2020s. By that point they will have bled so many members that they may never recover.

These leaders remember the glory days of the church in the 1980s, when they had gotten passed the black issue, the Internet was still in their future, and their main concern was working women. They bragged about 7% growth rates and much lower divorce rates than the average, but that all changed in the 1990s.

Unless they can figure out how to inject some youth, and by that I mean people in their 60s, not their 80s, running the church, they will be several decades behind. In the age of the Internet, that's not good enough. Doling out 1950s advice to children of the 21st C. just isn't cutting it. The first HS graduating class born in the 21st C is just 2 years away.

When Ballard was graduating High School World War II was ending.

Totally agree!

I think Ballard was attempting to make a joke when he made the lipstick comment and the comment about women not talking too much. The problem is that while those type of jokes may have gone over well in the 50's, 60's, 70's, and in Utah maybe even in the 80's; nowadays they are the type of jokes that would get you fired in a normal job. Besides being old, Ballard also has spent most of his life working in an institution that is legally allowed to discriminate against women. I think it was just this year that the church allowed women on their COB executive councils and maybe last year when they let women pray in conference. Totally ridiculous in this day and age!! Unfortunately though most TBM stay-at-home moms totally support this!

Also, I think with age Ballard just can't deliver a joke or light hearted comment the way that he used too. When you're that old things just don't come out the same way.

You'd think that would help him convert other executives, but no. Maybe all the executives hate each other.

Interesting that he was asking the missionaries to do the very thing he was unwilling to do himself.

Like shaking hands would have killed him. Him touting enduring to the end is so hypocritical. Shake the hands a-hole.
