Whelp I went ahead and broke the news to my parents today. I told them I'm leaving the church as soon as I leave BYU and they were like "yeah we figured".

They were cool about it. They said they were also pissed about how the mission turned out for me and they understood why I'd want to leave. What the conversation came down to was "Don't let your bitterness dominate the rest of your life, be a good person, don't let people take advantage of you, don't do anything stupid, we love you, and come up with a plan if you decide to transfer to a different school."

Love my parents c:

What the hell man... Totally unfair...

Trade you parents? Hell you can have the full truck load of crazy ass TBM relatives. My mother has mystical healing powers by just touching your hand. The rest are just as exciting.

Congrats on the cool parents.

I'm that kind of parent to my kids. However, I can't imagine my own parents ever being like that. Especially being mormon. You hit the lottery there.

Congratulations, and a big cheer for your parents supporting your informed decision as an adult.

Please embrace your new found freedom judiciously. Also, until your degree is posted, be VERY careful at the Y.

Wait...your parents are MORMON?
Really?

They've blown my expectations to shreds.
You are very lucky to have them. :)

Did you share your mission experience on the board? I'd like to read about it.

I'll start drafting it out. So much information it's hard to decide what to include without writing a 5 page essay haha.

Congratulations on having cool parents.

The reason mine were never disappointed and we've had a good relationship is because I've always been just inactive to them.

When I married my Buddhist girlfriend, and rarely went to church they could just believe that I was going through a phase. I go to church with them and take the sacrament on Christmas when they visit. I don't have the heart to tell them that their religion is crazy.

We've always had a good relationship as a result.

I think you will too as long as you both continue on a path of respect.

Great parents. I'd keep them if I were you!
