Wonder if he would have had to take a Broncospeak translator to his interview:
"You want them to rise above that and have fantastic sportsmanship," Mendenhall said. "I'm sure if you go back and look, there'll be an instance or two that ignited. Probably the majority wanted to handle it really well."
I doubt they've told him his days are numbered unless they already had someone commited to taking over his position.
For the life of me, I can't imagine who else they would even consider for the position. It's not like there's a large pool of temple recommend holding coaches that would fit the bill.
I can't imagine it being Robert Anae, the current offensive coordinator. He's demonstrated himself to be an arrogant S.O.B. and would probably be a PR nightmare for TSCC if he had to work with the media on a more or less daily basis.
A choice for them could be Navy's coach. He's a mormon. But I don't know if they'd want to use the triple option or if he'd change his offensive scheme.
Navy is a very cushy job. Niumatalolo is very well regarded in these parts. He is the winningest coach in Navy history. He beat Notre Dame twice. I don't see him leaving. Navy alums will go a long way to keep him here.
So what does Bronco get paid? I ask this in the context of his working for an organization (LDS Inc) that requires it's followers to swab out it's latrines.
I've just never figured out why you'd actually name a kid "Bronco"...but then again I've got 2nd and 3rd TBM cousin's named Kash, Kolt and Bullet.....so go figure.
I know of one mormon family out on the west coast (Dad loves to surf) that named their boy Reefe. I guess the idea that it sounds a bit like "reefer" was somehow lost on them ...
I don't want to give them any good ideas but they would be better off with a winning high school coach from the morridor. Ultimately though, the rule-bound inflexibility of the whole organization from the GAs down to the players will never allow them to be a successful team.
The only solution for BYU is to become more secular and let the students live their own lives. Wont happen because BYU is primarily a display case for the mormon church and the students are just actors under contract to put out a "good" image. It's also kept going as a mormon mating grounds.
I still love BYU football. I didn't watch it cause it was the church school. I watched it cause that is who my parents started watching when we moved to Utah. So it's what I grew up watching.
But I am not a big Bronco fan. Ever since he said football was #6 or #7 on his list of priorities, I've had a bad taste in my mouth for him. Just the way he speaks about fans and such too. Even as a TBM I didn't really like him. It's a great defensive coach, but probably shouldn't be head coach.
As for someone new, I loved Ty Detmer. He is a smart football guy. He is currently a high school coach in Tx. And if the church wanted a quiet, down to earth guy to put in that position. He would be the guy to get. Plus all cougar fans love him, and he was a Heisman winner.
That being said...I need to start watching local football teams here in Va. Because I know some day soon BYU won't be on TV every week and I will have to find a team to fill that void.
Unless BYU has a time machine they can't fix the real underlying problem: racism and no sex.
What top tier athelete wants to go to a place where they can't have sex? What black athelete wants to go to a place where people look at them like they are the seed of Cain?
2. He would get to coach in a Power 5 conference which would give him a chance to coach in a major bowl game instead of the bottom tier games BYU will be eternally playing in.
3. It will be easier to recruit to Wisconsin where he isn't hampered by BYU's provincial honor code.
4. Personal challenge of coaching in a more competitive situation.
That is what happened. That said, he did apply for the Oregon State job, which of course went to Gary Anderson. Which of course opened up the Wisonson job. Clear as mud?
Report: Video games experts, BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall applied for Wisconsin job

A news station in Madison, Wisconsin, reported Monday that BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall applied for the Wisconsin head coaching job, but it's some of the other applicants that have gained national attention.
According to an open records request obtained by WISCTV News 3 in Madison, Mendenhall was among 46 applicants for the Wisconsin head coaching position, along with a bartender, a salesman, a real estate agent and a teacher.
"...according to what SB Nation's Evan D. Brown posted on Scribd.com (see page 16 for Mendenhall's documents, which appear to just be his bio in the BYU football media guide).
Maybe some disgruntled BYU fan is trying to get rid of him.
Wisconsin is the better team by far (currently #17 in AP votes,) a member of a name league (the Big 10,) and it's a more prestigious position, at least outside of Mormon circles. Plus recruitment would be a whole lot easier.
Really?? Yes the talent pool is bigger, but if the head coach (and who knows if any of the big NCAA football coaches do this), can't really talk in detail about the fun things to do away from campus...non mormon fun things.
