Hi,

My life is a soundtrack.

I associate songs and movies with events in my life...

Leaving LDS, Inc. was no different.

Here's a list of the songs and movies that were poignant to me in coming out:

Star Trek, First Contact

Puccini: Turandot - Nessun Dorma

Never-Ending Road (Amhrán Duit)

Return To Green Gables

You Are Loved (Don't Give Up)

Dark Moll Of The Glen

Be Thou My Vision

Auld Lang Syne

Be Like the Sea

Mostly Celtic, some new age...

How about you?

The Matrix movie is a good one for serving as an analogy of waking up. There are plenty of people in the pews of Mormondom who've swallowed bottles of blue pills and they've made it clear that they don't want to be woken up from their Matrix program ;)

"NUMB" by Linkin Park best fits with my experience with the Church.

The movies would be "The Matrix", and "The Stepford Wives"

Survival- Madonna
God- Tori Amos
Personal Jesus and Blasphemous Rumors- Depeche Mode
Fire in the Hole and Godwhacker- Steely Dan

These songs relate for me something other than TSCC, but they work, too:
Sometimes- No Doubt
Not Ready to Make Nice- The Dixie Chicks
Good is Good- Sheryl Crow

And for movies, The Truman Show (saw this a few months after I left at 18) and Pleasantville.

Be Yourself - Audio Slave
Kick Start my Heart- Motley Crue

Any Marvel movie with Loki in it. He is a trickster and deceiver after all.

Although the lyrics don't really fit my status, I liked REM's "Losing My Religion" from 1991. I was still trying to be a good TBM and felt guilty for loving that song.

Blasphemous Rumour by Depeche Mode. Lyrics "I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours but I think that god has a sick sense of humor and when I die I expect to find him laughing".

Around this time last year I really liked this song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQ8xqyoZXCc

Our fist movie where we said, "You know what, it's rated R and we don't care" was Zombieland.

Mine was:

Some Nights - by Fun

I wanted to leave and had serious doubts, but was still affected by the pull of guilt.

The whole - 'what do I stand for, what do I stand for, Most nights, I don't know, anymore"

Kind of spoke to me.

Tom Petty; Free Fallin'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lWJXDG2i0A

She's a good girl, loves her mama
Loves Jesus and America too
Shes a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend too

It's a long day living in Reseda
There's a freeway runnin' through the yard
And I'm a bad boy 'cause I don't even miss her
I'm a bad boy for breakin' her heart

[Chorus]
And I'm free, free fallin' fallin'
And I'm free, free fallin' fallin'

All the vampires walkin' through the valley
They move west down Ventura Boulevard
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
And the good girls go home with broken hearts

[Chorus]

Free fallin', now I'm free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin',

I wanna glide down over Mulholland
I wanna write her name in the sky
I wanna free fall out into nothin'
Oh I'm gonna leave this, this world for a while

[Chorus]

Now I'm free, free fallin', fallin'
Now I'm free, free fallin', fallin'
Free fallin', fallin'
Free fallin', fallin'
Free fallin', fallin'

(it's great to be OUT!)

Lyrics from "Fearless," by Pink Floyd

Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd
Smiling
Merciless, the magistrate turns 'round
Frowning

And who's the fool who wears the crown?
And go down in your own way
And every day is the right day
And as you rise above the fear-lines in his brow
You look down, hearing the sound of the faces in the crowd

Losing my Religion - REM was the start of my questioning.

I'll Find My Way Home - Vangelis was my song to say that I was all I needed to make it through. Even when I faced serious self doubts about my sanity and wondered sometimes if Satan was really after me.

It's been quite a journey out of the mind control.

Now my song is I Can See Clearly Now. I am definitely a lot happier.

NOFX: Secret Society

Know Gods, Know Masters
Know how to live with magnificent disasters
The shiniest cloaks and most coveted daggers

Know limits, know rules
Know how to wield dangerous arcane tools
No access to soak in our success pools

In our Secret Society, we find freedom thru slavery
Absolute Power and Hierarchy, in our Secret

Amusement is scary, doing things totally unnecessary
Stocks and bonds are for restraining not trading

Procedures, Protocols, Programming sentient sex dolls
Prolific übermensch downfalls

In our Secret Society, we find freedom thru slavery
Absolute Power and Hierarchy, In our Secret

Relinquish CONTROL, for true freedom
Give up THE REIGNS, Surrender your FREE WILL
You will attain enlightenment
Learn to resign you mind AND SOUL
Give someone else COMPLETE CONTROL
Give you your sovereignty... if you wanna be free

Confliction, restriction
A desperate need for benediction
A decision to make no more decisions

Large cages and small stables
Forniphiliac lamps and tables
The willing who want to be unwilling enable us to live
In our Secret Society, we find freedom thru slavery
Absolute Power and Hierarchy, In our Secret
In our Secret Society, we find freedom thru slavery
Absolute Power and Hierarchy, In our Secret

Movie: "This Boy's Life"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4Uq6wECLts

Song: "The Last Goodbye"

Lyrics:
I saw the light fade from the sky
On the wind I heard a sigh
As the snowflakes cover my fallen brothers
I will say this last goodbye

Night is now falling
So ends this day
The road is now calling
And I must away
Over hill and under trees
Through lands where never light has shone
By silver streams that run down to the Sea

Under clouds, beneath the stars
Over snow one winter’s morn
I turned at last to paths that lead home
And though where the road then takes me
I cannot tell
We came all this way
But now comes the day
To bid you farewell
Many places I have been
Many sorrows I have seen
But I don’t regret
Nor will I forget
All who took that road with me

Night is now falling
So ends this day
The road is now calling
And I must away
Over hill and under tree
Through lands where never light has shined
By silver streams that run down to the Sea

To these memories I will hold
With your blessing I will go
To turn at last to paths that lead home
And though where the road then takes me
I cannot tell
We came all this way
But now comes the day
To bid you farewell

I bid you all a very fond farewell.
