Reading through these posts and other ex-mo sites, people always talk about playing on their phones during meetings.

I am surprised that the church hasn't banned all phone usage while attending church. Surely, using your phone while attending church is distracting and the spirit can't come in when you aren't paying attention.

Is anything ever said about this?

They should probably ban them when a train engineer is running a train.

Train engineers and conductors are banned from using personal electronic devices (including cell phones) when on duty. The penalty is immediate de-certification by the Federal Railroad Administration and immediate firing by the carrier company. That's Federal Railroad Administration Emergency Order #26.

The recent crash in Philadelphia does not appear to have been caused by the engineer using their cell phone. The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the crash.

To their credit, many mormons aren't as good at taking orders as they are at giving orders.

It would have to start at the top, like with a revemalation from ghawd, to his servant, even Thomas Wiggles Monson. Amen.

If I had to go back to church for some ridiculous reason,
having a cell phone would be the only way you could get me back.

*I do plan to get my tithing money back with some hocus pocus
magic tricks.

So many probably get away with it by saying they have it out for their scriptures.

Does Wiggles even know there is such a thing as cell phones? If so, does he have a clue that you can do things besides call your mother with them? Do they know someone could be looking a porn during the meetings? I don't think they do.

One of the worst things I saw at church was during Bishop Jackwagon's reign of terror. His wife was the Primary Music leader and in charge of the Primary program in September. She spent all year teaching the kids songs and all month teaching them speaking parts. And Bishop Jackwagon spent almost all the meeting checking his phone. He wasn't even subtle, since he was sitting up front for the program. Insulting to the kids, insulting to his wife.

We've visited a couple of churches since leaving Mormonism and you see far fewer people checking their phones. The Catholic congregation we visited paid the most attention in church - that service keeps you moving. The Episcopal church was too small - you wouldn't be able to hide your lack of attention in such a small congregation and a tiny chapel. The Pentecostal minister just called people out on it and asked why they thought he couldn't see them on their phones. He did it in a joking matter and everyone laughed, albeit a few laughed ruefully. But when we went back the next week, I didn't see a phone in sight. I think Mormons are afraid to tell people to put their phones away because they know how boring it is and are afraid no one will ever attend.

Nailed it!

When my mom visited my cousin's ward in another city about 2 years ago (none of us are in the morridor), she commented on the fact that no oone had a single print of scripture. Every single last person was had it on their phone or a tablet.

Well they are studying the scriptures....... No one would play games whilst worshipping in solemn humility.

The pathway for diversions, fact checking and more in-depth interests, not to mention various people are most certainly on this site, trying to learn what the gospel (of Mormoni) is all about.

Most are there because they (feel they) have to be there. At least, with media devices, one can feel at least a slight bit removed (from the propaganda campaign).

There is more entertainment, truth, and reality in a tablet or phone then there is, was, or ever will be in a M.C.

Everyone on their phones during services and yet a missionary can only call home twice a year.

At my church, they ask that you turn off or at least silence your cell phones out of respect for the liturgy.

My problem is that they don't tell you to turn it back on at the end of the services. It isn't until sometime Monday afternoon, when someone calls me on a land line that they comment that they tried my cell and their call went to voice messaging.

Very simple solution used by a number of small restaurants, movie theatres and businesses.

A cell phone jammer shuts off all incoming and out coming signals. Works like a charm.

And it's only a misdemeanor! So, win-win!

Well recent general conference talks have addressed using phones in meetings. Message... Don't do it.

Yet Wi-fi is in all the buildings and the password is freely given. That seemed like a pretty dumb move on the part of TSCC, but if they take it away now, they'll look really bad.

Phones are a huge issue because LDS Inc cannot keep blocking new sites like this (what some might consider anti) one that continue to be launched.

Unless members are ONLY googling their cross references through LDS Inc they will read so,e very different things than are being preached to them.

This is a bell that cannot be unrung.

Out of respect, I will turn off my cell phone when I go into a medical facility, or a library, for instance. If not completely "off", I'll use " vibrate" !
Otherwise, I am not turning my phone off except when I am asleep!
But I don't attend services anyplace...

If they wanted phones OFF they would post a sign, Right?

Imagine telling a YSA ward or branch to turn off their phones!

Most US members are using the gospel manuals online and reading online scriptures. Some of that phone use is probably that. Another big chunk is name indexing.
