That is one reason why I could never go to a Mormon service ever again...the fear that that hymn would be sung and I would vacillate between laughing and being disgusted.

Its my grandsons blessing this Sunday and I just can't go. My be meter is toooo high.

That's a close second for me.

#1? "If you could hie to kolob." Hence my monniker.
It isn't sung much anymore, but is still in the hymnal (at least I think so). Horrible melody, even worse words :(

It was ever so hard for me as a late teen to be sitting with my girlfriend in Sunday school or sac meeting and sing 'come, come ye saints' and not think about dry humping in the back of a hand cart.

...this was played for me in a Church parking lot. At that time, I was repulsed. Now, I realize it was for my own good............still horrible.

Oh, my vote goes to that most wrong hymn of all time, "Hail to the Man."

Too funny Kendal Mint Cake. Every Sunday DH and I go out for what we call "coffee on the canyon". (we live near the snake river canyon) As we are driving to the canyon rim walking path from our favorite coffee place we always sing the first line of that song, but we have changed the words to: "Welcome, welcome sabbath morning, now we rest cuz' we're not there"!

I guess we have now developed a happy memory with that ear-worm song.

"Welcome, welcome, Sabbath morning." Boring tune that tends to drag. Lyrics that are self-congratulatory and self-righteous (check out the fourth verse below). I came to detest this song.

4th verse

4. Here we meet with friends and neighbors;
Parents too are in the throng.
We are earnest in our labors.
To God's kingdom we belong.
Trials make our faith grow stronger;
Truth is nobler than a crown.
We will brave the tempest longer
Tho the world upon us frown.

Runner up: "Families can be together forever". Sappy sentimentality, another boring tune.

True to the Faith. Always sounds extra terrible with all the straining for real notes but still sharp ladies.

I might be a little bit the odd one out here in that hymns are one of the only things I liked about TSCC, but when you're forced to conduct hymn #37 in a family ward with an ancient organist, you can't help but hate it.

I never had to sing it, but there's an old hymn that tells the women to go out and find their husband another wife. Can you imagine???

Dear to the Heart of the Shepherd

I hated this one even as a faithful sheep myself. Hungry and helpless, and cold (in my head I always added - Oh, so cold!)

In our Lovely Deseret is also up there. "Tea and coffee they despise" blah, blah, blah

Oh yeah. We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet. I used to absolutely love that one, when I thought my family was perfect and Celestial Kingdom bound. In my later years of church, I learned more about my family's little secrets and how in the church's eyes we were no longer CK material. At that point these lines stung quite a bit:

2. When dark clouds of trouble hang o'er us

And threaten our peace to destroy,

There is hope smiling brightly before us,

And we know that deliv'rance is nigh.

We doubt not the Lord nor his goodness.

We've proved him in days that are past.

The wicked who fight against Zion

Will surely be smitten at last.

3. We'll sing of his goodness and mercy.

We'll praise him by day and by night,

Rejoice in his glorious gospel,

And bask in its life-giving light.

Thus on to eternal perfection

The honest and faithful will go,

While they who reject this glad message

Shall never such happiness know.

***********

I was really sickened by the idea of a loved one who in spite of betraying family trust would just be destroyed and never know any more happiness. I had a hard time singing those words, especially with such cheerful sounding music.

I am a child of God - I can't get rid off it.
Like As Sisters in Zion.

Also worse shoulder to the wheel
We thank thee oh Gawd for a prphet / Follow the Profit .
Called to seeve
They're awful. Most of the hymns are. I don't like organ and most of our ward can't sing. Esp. RS always remembered me of that Gremlin Christmas Carol Scene.
Just awful.

As a little boy, whenever the Sunday School chorister would take requests (which was most weeks), without fail, this was the first song requested. We all loved doing hand gestures.
Eventually, the adults started taking requests for anything but Book of Mormon Stories.

And was there also a song called "The Golden Plates?" About "a record 'played' by Nephi." =) I wouldn't believe anybody who tried to correct me because "a record 'made' by Nephi" just didn't make any sense.

"The golden plates lay hidden,
deep in the mountainside,
until God found one faithful,
in whom he could confide.

As remembered by me.

As a small child I had a hard time with this concept and the tortured phrasing.
