It drives me insane, why do mormons love the word "tender"?

For laughs, how have you heard the word tender be used?

Tender as in legal tender; money. Tender mercies = money raining from heaven. Blessings personified in coinage and bills. They want some of those gold plates for themselves.

I prefered tendering my resignation.

Mormonism is full of pithy filler words. That is just one of many, and it's trending.

I often hear Mormons from Utah and Idaho use the word "tender" to mean a babysitter.

The first time I heard it used that way, I had to ask the woman who said it what she was talking about. She said, "You know, I need a tender to tend my kids while my husband and I go out on a date."

I'm sure it's just a regional/cultural use of the word. I never heard "tender" used that way until I moved to Utah.

Yep, I've heard it used that way in Utah, too. Specifically Utah County. Teenagers actually say things like, "Friday? Oh, I can't, I have to tend." Seems to be used as a direct replacement for "babysit."

"Tender mercies"... whatever that is.

One of my FB friends posted on her wall over the winter: "My kids have all been sick this week, but we woke up to snow this morning. I love the tender mercies of the Lord!"

Yep! The Lord sent you some snow.

Moisture! Ha! I haven't lived in Utah for a while, so I almost forgot how much that word is used.

Yes, the Lord's "tender mercy" was sending your area some moisture while your kids were sick for a week. Very merciful. And tender.

I don't remember ever hearing "tender" used all that much when I was a kid. Of course, I grew up 2,000 miles from Utah. It seems to have started with Bednar's "tender mercies" talk. He pointed it out in the BoM and suddenly everything became a tender mercy to Mormons. My TBM wife and her family say it quite a bit, and it drives me crazy! You called every good thing in your life "blessings" for 50 years, but now they're all "tender mercies"?! Save yourself a word and some embarrassment and go back to "blessing"! Even if I don't agree, I'll stop mocking you behind your back.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the word tender is used too often by Mormons.

My body was nourished and strengthened many times by tender roast beef at ward dinners.

After the tender was done watching my kids, she returned home safely.

The tender lessons of the Bishop were often applied to my daily life.

I would be ungrateful today if I didn't mention my tender grandmother.

I hate all of these trite phrases with every fiber of my being.

Tender Mercies is not exclusive to Mormons. There are 13 references from the Bible (mostly from the Psalms).

After my Dad passed away in February, and I shared some cool experiences (on FB) that helped us heal, many of my non-LDS friends stated that the Lord was showing us tender mercies.

Growing up, I mainly heard it from born again Christians. Not in the cult.

And the word "even", as in "we ask these blessings in the name of our savior, even Jesus Christ..." Gah!

my farmer Dad would always go tend the water while I tended the chickens.

Pretty obvious that 'tend is a contraction of 'attend'.

My recollection tracks with Chump's: This all started in Mormondom when Bednar did his "tender mercies" thing.

And I think Mormons glom onto those pithy phrases to show how very connected to "the brethren" they are.

I never heard the term "tender mercies" growing up but it seems like I hear it now, all the time, about anything good. Overuse of any word makes me crazy. But this one has GOT to go because it's not only overused, it's so antiquated it's like talking to Amish people.

It's very foreign to Mormon speech, I think.
More FLDS, maybe...or protestant.

I love Tender Mercies. You know... the movie with Robert Duvall.

I've been out of Utah and the cult so long that I never heard a mormon talking about tender mercies of the Lard. Seems to me it's just another way of saying "we're so special." You know, when good things happen to mormons, it's the Lard's tender mercies. When good things happen to the rest of us it's just coincidence.

My guess is the trend started when some GA used it in a GC talk. And, it was decided in the collective subconscious of the collective that by using this word, it makes you sound more righteous. Kind of like using the word "even" incorrectly, or the GC vocal intonation that drives most of us crazy. ARGHGHH!H!H!H!!!
