All these young people and nothing to do. The bored depressed coeds trying to snag an inbred defective RM. The poor married couples in their crappy old minivans with nothing to do but to get an ice cream at the local supermarket.

In fact, everyone has nothing to do but to get an ice cream at the local supermarket. They do their part helping Utah lead the nation in ice cream consumption. The coeds are at Walmart buying out the candy section. Oh my heck, everyone is cleaning out the candy section helping Utah lead the nation in candy consumption.

No one is having a beer and hanging out with friends.

Let's go dancing! Not if you're under drinking age you're not. There used to be non-alcoholic dance places in Provo.
One of them (The Star Palace) is now a plasma clinic.

Perhaps a good orgy? No, not gonna happen. Heavy make outs and "Levi Lovin" for the lucky.

The Redbox movie dispenser has big crowds of college age kids.
Right next to the Redbox is a dispenser for the anti-depressants.

It's always good to reduce your blood volume before you go drinking.

seems like ... to ME at least... ALL the nursing homes/hospitals would have PLENTY of BYU students to visit the lonely patients/residents...

Habitat & other charities would be turning volunteers away (too many)

in a town like provo!

seriously, there should be lots of good-hearted ppl (students) who want to contribute to other, regardless of what they're told to do on Sunday... Don't ya think?

What different things are there to do in any other part of the country? I've lived in Florida, Nevada, Colorado and California and people do pretty much the same thing everywhere. The only difference would be surfing in CA and FL, skiing in CO, and gambling in NV.

Pthpbbt. All those activities are still around, I'm sure of it. The G Spot might no longer be around, but there's still some place that encourages hedonism and shenanigans.

Is that a real place? I've heard it exists but was never able to find it, much to my wife's chagrin...

(Sorry, it's the beer & rock 'n' roll talking...)

There's still people who know how to party in Happy Valley, some even with their own places. You just have to know the right people.

Seem to have a lot of hookers in Provo, apparently keeping busy.

Funny! I saw one listed as, "Non-judgmental passionate cougar..."

Does that mean older woman, or BYU co-ed? ;-)

There are BYU co-eds that are not judgmental?

Anyone remember oe are familiar with the "August Arts Center?" That was a place that my son organized for Provo youth to dance and listen to music and perform. It was like a large 1950s beatnik hangout. No liquor allowed, but they had a large library of edgy books. The police would not give up investigating, illegally searching, and illegally arresting and detaining my son and the two other organizers. They finally jailed him and I had to post bail and fly back from overseas for the kangaroo court. He was convicted of "urban terrorism," but given leg bail if only he would promise the court to leave Provo and never come back. One kid avoided prosecution because he had a mission call. Unfortunately, the third eventually died in a heart breaking drowning accident with two others.

Your August Arts Center sounds like a great place. Not sure what "edgy books" could be...porn? Murder novels?

Urban Terrorism, really? Gah.

I'm assuming by edgy she/he means political, Marxist, anarchist, etc. Wouldn't go over well in a place like Provo.

After I had left the church and my retreat into alcoholism, child abuse and gambling-induced poverty didn't materialise, this was one of the things that blew me away - how much of life's simple pleasures are out there to enjoy and explore, and how life just passes by all those sad little morgbots.

Exmo brothers and sisters, it is at this time that I feel impressed by the Spirit to quote the one verse from the Book of Mormon that has at least a semblance literary depth:

"The time passed away with us, and also our lives passed away like as it were unto us a dream, we being a lonesome and a solemn people, wanderers, cast out from Jerusalem, born in tribulation, in a wilderness, and hated of our brethren, which caused wars and contentions; wherefore, we did mourn out our days."

In the name of beer & cigars, amen.

and I hated it then. That was some 38 years ago. I was devout mormon at the time. I don't consider it a friendly place in the least.

I dunno, I LOVED Provo. I'm serious. We had tons of fun, were very creative, involved in service projects, good friends, innovative activities like putting on plays, learning cool things, science experiments etc... one of the best times of my life so far. I think having fun requires less alcohol or the city making "fun" activities and more creativity and energy from the individual. I could have a good time in the middle of nowhere. ...That said, I'd sort of have a hard time having fun at an amusement park. I really hate having my fun dictated. Heck, maybe I'm just weird...

I enjoyed Provo when I was young, cute, and girls would show up in my bedroom while I was studying, because they wanted to make out with me. Never even went on a date with them. Otherwise, No.

I was once a freshman there at Deseret Towers. Why, we had all sorts of stuff to keep us busy, i.e.:

*Family Home Evenings
*Ward pic nics
*Edited movies at the on-campus theater
*Firesides, where we got to keep our monkey suits on all Sunday long. It was awesome.
*Allen Field House
*Walking to Y mountain
*Dating

yeah it was sad.

I find this post a tad amusing. One person, or many, find enjoyment in snuggling up at home with ice cream and a movie. One person, or many, find enjoyment in drunken sex. Who are we to judge what makes a person happy? And what level of arrogance or ignorance leads anyone to believe that happiness is achieved in one specific manner. This post strikes me as deliciously anti Mormon.

That's what I think as well. Sometimes I do like to go out to bars on Saturday nights. But staying in watching Netflix or renting from Redbox is fun as well. Sometimes I even prefer to just be left alone on Saturday nights.

Whatever happend to the Ivy Tower?

Not sure I totally agree with "sad, sad". I had a ton of fun in Provo although I was still active back then.

I think this is a 'to each his/her own' topic. Some of my friends didn't like Provo but most loved it. If someone were active and part of the singles wards then I would say if that person didn't have a good time there might be something wrong with them!

I actually liked living in the dorm! There was always someone to talk to, to borrow hair spray from, always a group headed out to a party somewhere. BYU had some sort of party every night, except for Sunday. Coming and going, we always had to thread through a pack of boys hanging around outside. Our dorms, and our floor, specifically, were known for housing the hottest girls. We had cheer leaders, song leaders, Cougarettes, Homecoming Queens, student body officers, etc.

It's true that BYU was very snobby, and 90% of the boys dated 5% of the girls. I was flattered to get so many dates, until I realized that most of the guys were looking for girls with wealthy fathers--that was the attraction. My dorm was also the most expensive place to live, back then. Another secret was that the guys wanted to date a girl that the other guys wanted to date--competition, or something. I came to BYU with a whole group of good looking young men, who had been my friends all through childhood. I also had two very handsome cousins to show me the ropes. I would recommend this strategy to any girl at BYU, with the warning to not marry any of them! Just go out and have fun. No sex, either. I enjoyed playing tennis and skiing, but the classes were uninspiring, so I transferred to the University of Utah. Salt Lake was even more fun, plus I got better grades, dated better men. It was more like a normal life.

The girls in Provo who are able to go out for ice cream are the lucky ones. The girls scooping the ice cream, cleaning the store, working the night shift in a basement somewhere--they're not so lucky. I married a BYU football hero, and ended up living in a shack that had polluted water in the basement, which gave me strep infections, over and over. My temple husband beat me almost every day, yet I was the one working to put him through school. No matter how sick and battered I was, I worked hard at those two jobs, to keep me away from him. Provo turned into a nightmare world, and I don't like going there. (shudder)

Provo... bah. I lived there for 5 years and didn't see much of it at all. Just stayed cooped up in my single dorm room, binging on porn and video games every weekend.

I heard a rumor/statistic once that Provo has the highest porn consumption per capita or something. Probably made up but hilarious if even close to true. I always wondered how many of my classmates were secretly addicted.
