Last night I had a long conversation with my friend who just learned that his daughter is a lesbian. After talking to me a couple of times, he and his wife sat down to do some serious research into the history and doctrine of the LDS church. They talked to me of how they had to stop multiple times to consider what they had just read and how it contradicted not only what they were taught in/by the church but also what they knew to be true in their own lives.
After giving a lot of thought to the matter, they have decided to tender their resignations from the LDS church. They can’t reconcile what they’ve always believed with what is going on in their own family. So they have decided that their family matters more than their church.
To make matters more interesting, they talked to their (mostly adult) children about what they have decided. To their surprise, their oldest son and his new wife have not been to church in over a year and have no interest in ever having anything to do with it again. So those are two more people who have decided to add their own resignations to the collection.
They said their other child – in Europe right now – just said she wanted to talk about it when she got home in a few weeks.
I am practically doing a “happy dance” over here right now.
