After raising my children in Mormonism, where coffee is demonized enough that most Mormon's believe it will keep you out of the CK, I started enjoying coffee several years ago. The odor was freeing as it reminded me that coffee isn't evil.

Now, years later, I am able to enjoy a cup with my returned missionary son. He also left the church, and to be able to sit down and relax with a cup of coffee is a cherished time. It shouldn't be. Drinking coffee is a non-event in most people's lives, but because of teachings that coffee is anti-god makes it more enjoyable. We both laugh when we think back of us both sitting in the temple with robes and green aprons on, and try to visualize how we could have one day sat down for coffee together.

So, the most important benefit of coffee: it washes the taste of Mormonism out of my mouth.

for the same reason that beers drinkers -- from cans -- fail to make it to a trash receptacle prior before their patience runs out and they just toss it out their windows.

Evidently the aluminum in beer cans effect brain cells to the point that the environment issues means nothing to them anymore.

FYI -- I personally stick with "on tap" or bottles -- but it seems likely that the beer I drink has touched aluminum as well.

My theory is that they toss is to it's not in a cop's sight should they be pulled over. In a previous life I have done traffic stops and seen the empties on the floor of the back seat.

But similarly, it seems to me that smokers are somehow incapable of discarding their empty packs in a trash bin. I see them in parks where there are abundant receptacles, why?!? Same with plastic beer cups--I live in a student neighborhood, and they're all over the place, even on trash nights when everybody's barrels are out on the sidewalk.

I can't drink beer with my son, but I buy him exotic craft brews once in a while, which he enjoys. But we DO love our caffeine brews!

He likes a French press. I much prefer the "Clever Coffee Dripper," which lets you steep it in the funnel for a few minutes before draining it into the mug. Somehow, we've managed to appreciate each other in spite of these profoundly different beliefs.

If you have only experienced American bitter coffees, I agree. But try a nice sweet organic light roast forest bean, cold brewed or expressed thru an Aeropress, and you may change your mind.

Your post made me smile danr. You make drinking coffee sound like what a baptism should be. So glad you have that with your son. I love coffee.

Isn't it amazing that coffee will keep you out of the CK but shunning your family won't? The Mormons certainly have their priorities straight, don't they?

You must drink beer to get into heaven. An absolute fact that I "know" is true. You can also get into heaven by drinking coffee, but you will need a sponsor.

My morning ritual includes coffee with the morning paper. It gives me such a feeling of well-being, I can't even explain it.

I had grandparents, uncles and aunts in Idaho and Wyoming who drank coffee and it was discussed in hushed tones in my parents' home about how sad it was that they couldn't keep the WofW, and so much of that attitude was relayed in how I raised my children. Now, with my immediate family out of the church, we enjoy our coffee immensely. I can't believe I didn't try it until I was 58 years old!

and all of that human trafficking that enslaves humans into the porn industry.

Doubt it holds health benefits for them, in all honesty.
But many aren't aware of that sickening reality of the porn industry.

Few want to admit that their beloved product (of whatever nature) that makes them feel so good actually comes at a significant cost to many innocent people: http://www.towardfreedom.com/35-archives/labor/2601-combating-slavery-in-coffee-and-chocolate-production

Do we do as some Mormons do and ignore facts that run contrary to our desires? Since serious exploitation of the innocent exists in so many industries, do we persist in our consumption on the basis that exploitation will always exist? It's easy to be critical about products or services that are disagreeable to us, but what about products or services that we really enjoy?

I did...

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/homo-consumericus/201001/pornography-beneficial-or-detrimental

The Internet has removed so much of the stigma of obtaining and viewing pornography. Consenting adult pornography can be helpful to consenting adult sexuality.

There are negative aspects in the overall world of pornography too.

Interesting article.

Besides all the health benefits of moderate consumption of coffee, first yummy sip of the morning always makes me smile.

It as such a friendly drink.

I never really understood why the hell coffee was banned in the first place. Why not vegemite or liver?

I remember hearing somewhere (I'm sorry I can't back this up) that Emma belonged to a group that believed in only drinking cold water. I think that was the reason for the "inspiration".

I understand this very well. my two sons and I always drink coffee together when we're with each other. It's a nice morning ritual when they visit. Even better is taking them both out for beer which I am forbidden from drinking at home. it's nice to have two ex-Mo sons who can have a beer with. they used to be my kids but now they are my friends.
