This took me about 1 minute to do online.

The most popular Christian hymn of all time is probably Amazing Grace:

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, Who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.

Words: John Newton (1779)

Compare that to a very popular Mormon Hymn:

If You Could Hie to Kolob, 284 – William W. Phelps

1. If you could hie to Kolob In the twinkling of an eye,
And then continue onward With that same speed to fly,
Do you think that you could ever, Through all eternity,
Find out the generation Where Gods began to be?

2. Or see the grand beginning, Where space did not extend?
Or view the last creation, Where Gods and matter end?
Me thinks the Spirit whispers, “No man has found ‘pure space,’
Nor seen the outside curtains, Where nothing has a place.”

3. The works of God continue, And worlds and lives abound;
Improvement and progression Have one eternal round.
There is no end to matter; There is no end to space;
There is no end to spirit; There is no end to race.

4. There is no end to virtue; There is no end to might;
There is no end to wisdom; There is no end to light.
There is no end to union; There is no end to youth;
There is no end to priesthood; There is no end to truth.

5. There is no end to glory; There is no end to love;
There is no end to being; There is no death above.
There is no end to glory; There is no end to love;
There is no end to being; There is no death above.

One talks about being saved by Grace, the other about becoming a God. And the plurality of Gods.

Mormons don't see a problem with this. They call themselves Christians. I have a problem with this.

#3 sounds too much like Robin in the Batcave decoding one of the Riddler's secret messages.....

When I was investigating, I found it odd that "Amazing Grace" did not appear in the Mormon hymnal.

This must be a good sign that I've been out awhile. When did they dump the green monster 1985 hymnal? I don't recall Amazing Grace being in there.

If you look, you'll find that "Amazing Grace" is not in the LDS hymnal, and never was. I have LDS hymnals going back into the mid-19th century. I am sure you're getting it mixed up with "How Great Thou Art," Mormons' big nod to Christian hymns back in 1985.

I would have said AMAZING GRACE was in the green monster of '85, but I just checked, and it's nowhere to be found in the 1985 printing. Perhaps in was included in a subsequent printing of the 1985 version. . . .

Well, hymn words aren't sacred texts. So this is hardly definitive.

But it gives the idea.

And yes, as soon as you get to "Gods" you've left Christianity well behind.

Very true. The un-Christian Mormon doctrine of God being a superman from Kolob reminds me of the ancient aliens theories about Anunnaki from planet X or Nibiru. There must be a lot of UFO cults out there that sound a lot like Mormonism. I could imagine one of them singing a song about traveling to planet x to meet the Anunnaki who seeded mankind on earth. The only difference between the two would be the names. Mormons believe that a man who became God sent his biological children from Kolob to earth.
