Regarding the treatment of foreigners in a homeland?

Or is this simply a convenient case of mis-translation?

When there's anything in the Old Testament that Christians don't like, they whip out the claim that Jesus fulfilled/made obsolete the Old Testament laws. But when there are things in the Old Testament Christians like, they hold them with a death grip.

He also said, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul & all your strength. And you shall love your neighbor as yourself. All the law & prophets are contained in these two."
So, yeah

Don't forget:

It was a different time.

You're taking that out of context!

Those words don't mean what you think they mean.

Well, please don't leave us hanging. Tell us what the words concerning treatment of foreigners really meant.

"It was a different time." Foreigners, in those days, weren't Mexican rapists.

"You're taking that out of context!" It was only in the context of some obscure once-every-fifty-years Jewish festival that Jews had to be kind to foreigners. At all other times, they were fair game.

"Those words don't mean what you think they mean." Strangers actually means gentiles. We're not jewish, so we are the gentiles here, and the foreigners have to be kind to us.

Does that sound like the bible-thumpers he was quoting?

BTW, I get that you are joking. But how else can we counter the arguments?

Maybe they'd respond with:

2 Chronicles 15:13

God sure likes changing his mind!

@Deco
I am not sure how the passage needs to be defended since it says that they should not take advantage off, falsely accuse (in court) or defraud foreigners (with false weights and measures) that were living among the Jews. I don't see anything wrong with that.

wut exactly need to be defended here, opie ?

33 And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him.

34 But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

~

brb ~ thumping bible

brb ~ not vexing strangers

brb ~ loving strangers as thyselfing (semi)

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/vex
Full Definition of VEX
transitive verb
a : to bring trouble, distress, or agitation to <the restaurant is vexed by slow service>
b : to bring physical distress to <a headache vexed him all morning>
c : to irritate or annoy by petty provocations : harass <vexed by the children>
d : puzzle, baffle <a problem to vex the keenest wit>

Don't vex foreigners means that you shouldn't harass them just because they are from another country!

Nothing wrong with that.

Proud Bible-thumper here, girded up and ready to defend.

...but confused about what I'm meant to be defending. This is one of my more favourite verses of Leviticus. It's a very old book, and a lot of it is hard to apply directly to modern life, but this one is a slam-dunk, and one of those that reflects key themes throughout the Bible: look after the poor, widows, orphans and immigrants. This stuff will NEVER go out of date.

So what is it you want me to defend? Is it the politics of a bunch of people who claim to share my holy book, but appear not to have read it? I'm not sure I'm well-placed to do that.

Don't assume you know everything about my faith based on the stereotypes presented by media in your particular corner of the world. Just cos someone shouts about Jesus doesn't mean they're speaking for him.

I am confused as to the OPs intention. Is he making fun of right wing Christians who are against immigration, does he object to treating foreigners well or does he simply not have any idea what the passage means? Perhaps he could clarify.

So your point is that modern day Jews like the ones living in Israel don't follow their own scriptures? Is that what you are getting at?
