One must ask -- what do fundies think *isn't* Satanic?

The Christian Right Is Having a Meltdown Over the ‘Satanic’ Grammys

https://www.vice.com/en/article/v7v9gy/republicans-satanic-grammy-sam-smith-kim-petras

The Christian Right is in a tailspin after the Grammy awards—not because they feel that Beyoncé was robbed of album of the year, but because they think that the event organizers, in conjunction with Pfizer, were trying to summon the antichrist.

Sam Smith and Kim Petras gave a fiery performance of their Grammy award winning single “Unholy.” Smith wore red leather, while Petras danced in a cage surrounded by flames. Dominatrix-esque dancers wearing horns and holding riding crops surrounded them. And at the end, Smith donned on a top hat replete with devil horns, and danced with a cane.

“The Grammy’s featured Sam Smith’s demonic performance and was sponsored by Pfizer,” tweeted far-right congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who routinely peddles conspiracy theories. “American Christians need to get to work.”

“Satanic panic” conspiracies have seen a resurgence in the past decade, thanks to the rise of QAnon, which borrowed many decades-old themes and fears of secret, powerful Satanic cabals preying on children’s innocence.

Satanic panic has also seeped into mainstream Christian nationalism in the U.S. The movement deems any cultural or political institutions that don’t reflect evangelical Christian values as “satanic” or “anti-Christ.” This has included everything from school kids learning about LGBTQ issues, to vaccines, to drag queens.

For many right-wing conservatives watching, this year’s Grammy’s offered an unholy alliance of everything they hate. Firstly, Pfizer—the pharmaceutical company that came out with the first COVID-19 vaccine—was among this year’s event sponsors. Then there was Smith, who’s been targeted by culture warriors since coming out as gender queer in 2019. Smith has since celebrated their identity with playful, flamboyant fashion. In a recent sexy music video, they wore everything pink, fluffy gowns and daring, burlesque-style outfits and was accused of “normalizing pornography.”

Earlier in the evening on Sunday, Smith and Petras also won the award for “best pop duo.” Petras, who accepted the award, made Grammy history by becoming the first transgender woman to win an award.

Well, the fundies could choose not to watch the Grammys (as I did,) but that would be too easy, wouldn't it? So much nicer to watch and be offended.

Sam Smith is an interesting individual. I saw SS perform on SNL, and it was the first set of performances that I had been interested in (on SNL) in a very long time.

Does SS need extra signs and tokens? I have some I'm not using.

I can't think of any greater waste of time than watching the Grammys--except for paying attention to what the fundamentalists say.

Every time any one of these shows happens, I immediately think, "We JUST did that, didn't we? Like, just a month or two ago. I swear, they were just talking about the Grammy's in November-December of this last year."

Friend: "No, you're thinking of the Emmys."
Other friend: "That wasn't the most recent. You're thinking of the Oscars."
Me: "And before that one, we had the Academy Awards."
Friend: "Those two are the same things. Oscars is another name for it."
Other friend: "No, you're thinking of the Golden Globes."
Me: "Which one did Ricky Gervais host and just sh** on everybody?"
Friend: "No, he hasn't done it for a while. You're thinking of SNL."

Etc. until none of us really know the difference between any of these shows/events nor when they happened.

I always think of those shows as Hollywood types congratulating themselves. Sometimes it's fun to watch the arrivals for the fashions.

Certain Christians need to sit down and quit clutching their pearls. They seem to be committing plenty of sins themselves. It was just a performance with people dressed up to push the limits, just like Madonna did 30 years ago and someone does almost every darn year.

I didn't notice anyone complaining about the long performance of "God Did" at the end of the program.

Everyone seemed to be going the extra mile to be kind, supporting, and inclusive of everyone....except apparently certain Christian types who see Satan hiding under every rock. They seem to thrive on stirring up trivial things to flame culture wars, IMO.

I see it is a massive exercise in affectation but then not being interested much in popular music, which seems to dominate, it is what I would expect. Or perhaps it's a generational thing.

I don't so.

..this has been going on for a long time.

http://www.classicbands.com/banned.html

and the listing at this website is only a partial one. While a couple of Mormon banning attempts are included, the site mentions nothing about Lyn Bryson's or W. Cleon Skousen's work in this area. (Come to think of it, it doesn't mention David Noble from whom Cleon got many of his ideas on the subject, either).

See E. Lynn Balmforth's 1971 book, ROCK 'N REALITY. his Master's Thesis from BYU's Religion Dept. It's very, very close to Frank Garlock's tract, THE BIG BEAT, A ROCK BLAST, a music professor from Bob Jones University.

See David A. Noebel's books from 1966-1974, about folk singers (Phil Ochs) taking over the U.S. and the Beatles causing teenage cannablism.

<Gasp!>

It would be Waycross, GA...not surprised

Wow...it was worse than I thought...

Early August 1966, Christian groups, primarily in the Southern United States took to the streets to burn the sin out of their beloved Beatles records in response to John Lennon’s remark that the Beatles were “more popular than Jesus.”

Yet nobody complains about the Utah phenomenon of selling "dirty" (their word) sodas with suggestive names, because hey, 1/3rd cup of sugar mixed with half & half is practically sacramental.

I watched the performance, and it clearly WAS satanic.

Whether satanism is a bad thing is a different question. Whether it is something worth kicking up a fuss about is a different question. Whether doing satanic performances on TV should be allowed as part of "freedom of expression" is a different question.

But he was dressed up in all red with devil horns. That is CLEARLY a reference to satan or at least devils or demons or something like that.

The conversation should be "Yeah he dressed up like a devil, but there's nothing wrong with that".

Not them going "That is satanic" and us going "lol no it isn't". If you read what people on the right are saying on the Internet they are thinking WE are crazy because we can't notice how he's dressed! We need to admit that we see what they see, and instead make the choice that it's OK to do that in a free country.

So, I take it you aren't into Satanic bondage? Who knew!

It was dramatic and sort of stupid, meant to make people uncomfortable. He (Sam Smith) knows how to get attention apparently. The whole Satan thing is more like a cartoon thing to me.

One of the most offensive things I've seen was the Jesus snuff film Passion of the Christ, yet it got praise back in the day. My parents were mortified when Mick Jagger wiggled his tongue.
It's all in the views of the beholder. Complaining seems to make them strive to be even more outrageous.

No better way to turn the doctrines of "make believe" on their heads than to shine a light on them with parody and humor.

I hate award shows, I see them as celebrity circle jerks. They can heap praise on their own, but I don't have to.

>> The Grammies Are Satanic! <<

If god's hand touches everything, so does satans. Therefore, isn't everything satanic to some extent?

Disclaimer: I don't believe in either entity.

Satan has had a starring role in the Mormon temple ceremony for years.
It's about time he gets a shot at the big time. (Assuming the Grammys are considered the big time)

Seeing the hoopla over the Grammy’s almost makes me wonder if I watched a different show. Kim’s acceptance speech made me cry.

I loved the performance and am excited to see their performance in SLC-Vivent in August.

They are performing and living the life I once wanted. The closest I got was performing a piano solo at a ward talent show as a teen in the 70s dressed as Liberace.

I misread that: I thought it said 'Satanic Grannys'

New name for a punk band!

P.S. If you really want to see some hedonistic stuff, watch his 'I'm Not Here To Make Friends' video. **shudder**

The infamous "Hell's Bells: The Dangers of Rock 'N' Roll" (1989) "Christian" anti-rock video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vylqX6sevqo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9Nq2ru2MAE

Judging from the comments, it seems to have had the opposite effect...

"This video fed my appetite and curiosity about the occult as a born again Christian teenager. I mark this video as the beginning of a rich spiritual path that eventually included a deep study of magick, Satanism, Wicca, Asatru, and Yoruba. After 10 years of brainwashing by evangelicals the content of this video gave me hints on how to undo all that faulty religious wiring - and set the musical soundtrack to my life! Thanks Reel to Real ministries! "
