I've just listened to John Dehlin's interview with Hans Mattsson the former 70 in Sweden. Wikipedia says he and his wife live in Spain now. What's his membership status?
I just listened to the last portion of the Dehlin interview about Mattson's current views of the church. It was enlightening to be sure. As important a figure as Mattson is an excommunication would be all over the Internet. I'm going to proffer that the authorities will allow him to be a "Jack Mormon" in Sweden.
I'd guess that he is close to Tom Phillip's situation, meaning either that he would be too embarrassing to excommunicate or that he could retaliate by revealing a lot of inconvenient facts. Mattson is someone whom the church should leave alone. They'd be foolish to pick a fight.
But I'd love to hear what path he has chosen for himself and (?) his family.
You can listen to Hans Mattson and his wife Birgitta share their journey to the present in Audio files of 2015 Exmormon conference at exmormon radio website or links to download audio file here -> http://exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,1698585
I briefly talked with Hans at the conference. I also wanted to know his status, and I wanted to know in a completely unambiguous manner. So, I began by defining a rigorous definition of "Mormon". I said...
"My definition of 'Mormon' is someone who is listed as a member in the records of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, AND ALSO believes that Thomas Monson is a prophet of God".
Then I said, "based on this definition of 'Mormon', are you a Mormon?"
Hans replied, "No".
I then said, "Based on your response, then either (1) they STILL have you listed as a member, OR (2) they excommunicated you, OR (3) you resigned. Which of those three is it?"
Hans replied, "The first one".
This sounds a lot like Tom Phillips' status.
BTW, I was thoroughly impressed with Hans and his wife, Birgitta. I think they are remarkable people.
